I am on the verge of ordering a brand new 2022 Tacoma Limited with a 5 foot bed. I will be towing a Ranger bass boat OR one of my race cars on an open trailer....I know the race car weighs 3200 pounds, and I am pretty sure the trailer is under 3200, so I am under the 6400 pound weight limit.... I am sure several people have towed cars on trailers before, but before I order this I want to make sure this Toyota will do it. What does everyone think of the yyblack442-80.jpg LIMITED Toyota? ANYTHING that I should add to the order that is not stock on the LIMITED? Thanks...ordered my 2004 YUKON new and it has only 111,000 miles on it, back and forth to the drag strip...no problems, but just want to change to a new & shorter vehicle. THANKS

I’m not saying it can’t do it, but I would recommend you get yourself a fullsized truck.

Also a good recommendation for you, if you’re set on buying a Tacoma would be to go to a Toyota dealer and have them give you one overnight to “test drive”. Don’t tell them you’ll be towing but slap a mount on it and hook it up and take the trailer for a short drive. That’ll give you all you need to know if you feel comfortable buying it and using it for that kind of towing.

I second this. If you’re looking for a tow rig, the Tacoma ain’t it.

I have over 40 years of towing experience so I have some insight. You would be at max capacity for the truck so unless you are going somewhere close or towing on flat ground you need a bigger truck.

    Keep the Yukon.

    Or pick a Tundra.

If you only tow the car local (short distances) and fairly flat terrain, the Tacoma *may* be ok. But that 1st 100 mile trip to another track you won't be too happy. Especially in a crosswind.

And based on a Google search of your name, I'd wager you don't stick with the local strip.

BTW, 'Limited' has nothing to do with towing. It's just glammed up. Any '22 v6 with tow package will be the same when it comes to towing.

That looks like more than the ~6,000# max a Tacoma can tow..

You won’t be happy, and you would be over the towing capacity of the limited. Get a full size, or get a n aluminum trailer. They weigh around 1800lbs. Personally I would go full size.

Agreed with all of the above.

Can it do it? Sure. Will it be comfortable doing it? No.

thanks - you've helped me make my decision and it won't be a Tacoma. I will look at the Tundra. I appreciate everyone taking their time to answer. Phil

I'm often amazed by what some folks are towing or hauling with their Tacomas, ignoring GVWR, payload limits & tongue weight. Doubtful that any of these trucks will join the ranks of 200K mile Tacos.

I worked in dealerships for 14 years. It’s actually more common than you think. A lot of people come in and are unsure if they want to make the purchase. A lot of times the sales manager or person will let them take the car for the night. Not sure if it actually works for or against the sale. But it happens quite a bit. Just have to have valid licenses on file and insurance info. I’m sure it’s after they already ran a credit check to make sure the person would have approval.
I even vaguely remember a time at one of the dealerships and the car got totaled. Their (customers) insurance covered everything. They ended up buying another on the lot.

Not sure how it would play out if you wanted to tow with it. That’s why I said it’s probably not wise to tell them that. Although the one auto group I worked for I’m sure would allow it if you said that was the reason you wanted the test drive. You’d be surprised what they are willing to do for a sale.

I was actually wondering this over the weekend. In the past when I was shopping I was frequently invited to take one for the night. This year, I would be surprised if they still did that. So many of them said "its going to sell today whether you're the buyer or not." Which of course, the minute they said that I politely thanked them for showing me the car and walked. Nobody even tried to chase me. It was weird. Must be the worlds easiest year to be a car salesman. You just have to stand there and breathe.

The new Tahoe's look pretty good. It will tow better and get better MPG's. Just saying...

I would buy the taco for mild towing only. It will do it fine, but it will be "stressful".

If you put a deposit down that would put a hold on the vehicle. Then you could take it that night. If you didn’t like it they’d just sell it to the next guy. But there’s been multiple times where someone came in and took a car and 2 seconds later someone else came in looking for that or a sales guy claimed his customers wanted it. Nothing like sales people fighting over a car neither of them own lol
