Dog nail clipper recommendations

Anybody know know of a GOOD set of nail clippers for dogs? With the Mrs. working from home now, she likes keeping the dogs inside & their nails are out of control.

 

I just use a dremel tool and take it slow

 

I use the dremel weekly with the sanding drum. This was recommended by our breeder, and I think Boxer actually likes having it done. I started doing it with him when he was still a puppy oh, and now that he's 18 months old he pretty much closes his eyes and goes to sleep when I do it.

I use the fine grit and slow speed on the dremel.

He's 72 pounds. He lays on his back on the sofa, legs up, and I do his 'fingernails' first, then his 'toenails'.

 

I bought a Miller's Forge set at a yard sale and really like them. Sharp and made in USA. I'm not sure if the newer ones are US made but mine are. Have one person feed the dog peanut butter while the other cuts to make it easier on all of you.

The two tools you need with the grinder being optional.

Best technique is to cut the nails with the dog standing. You might need a helper. Lotsa treats throughout.

Hold the clippers at a 45 degree angle with the nail inserted and the tip of the clippers pressed against the floor. This will provide a solid base to clip and avoid the quick.

Always have some of the styptic powder handy.

My dogs like it too. I'm not sure if they just like the attention but they definitely don't mind the dremel

 

Our dogs hate the dremel, but we somehow get through the grinding.

 

Another fan of the dremmel for our two Bostons.

 

I have a set like what pztank has. They twist the nail & make the dogs cry. Honestly, I think a pair of dykes would be better. Their nails are way too long for a dremmel right now. I need something sharp that doesn't twist the nail.

 

Use the dremel and trim them in stages over the course of a few weeks. Don't take too much off at one time. Wait a few days, then trim again.

 

Keep some silver nitrate sticks or styptic powder on hand just in case you go too far on the nail.
