I looked at that while I was shopping. Basically, the only advantage of Hydra hubs over the 1/1 is engagement. The engagement of the 1/1 hubs is so good that most normals won't even notice the upgrade to hydra vs the 1/1. I only own the hydra version because the boost 1/1s weren't in stock with an XD driver when I was shopping. It was worth the $150 to get them now.. lol

Pulled the trigger and went with a Poseidon Redwood - was originally planning on getting the 'X' but it had too many pitfalls in the way of components. The Redwood is a bit heavier, but it has through axles, can hold up to a 2.8" tire (will be fun on single track), and has tubeless ready rims. If I end up on more pavement than trails or gravel roads, I can get a set of 700c for relatively cheaply, and still have the ability to put the offroad tires on for whenever. Have some pretty notable gravel trails out by me and with this bike, I can ride from the house to them and get more mileage during a ride.

Looking forward to not always having to throw the full suspension bike in the truck to go for a ride (save that for the weekends).

The ultimate goal would be to do some bikepacking trips and start using my back country camping gear again. Having a travel trailer has made camping more accessible for my son and wife (read: the only way my wife will camp these days), but I miss the old days of tent camping and fully being in the woods.

That bolded portion I think is important and another reason I did not spring for Hydra. I'm not a high end rider and again, I'm not racing so I'm not sure I'd really notice difference. I'll notice the jump from crappy stock hubs to the 1/1 hubs, but not sure I'd really notice beyond that.

Another thing to consider between the two is drag. I've run Hydras and 1/1's and I now intentionally only run 1/1 hubs on all of my bikes due to the reduced drag. Sure, 690 points of engagement are cool, but that comes at a cost somewhere. In this case - drag. I've never missed a techy obaticale because my hub "only" had 90 points of engagement.

I came to the same conclusion a couple years ago when I was researching a wheel build. I went with 1/1 (the highest engagement I've had to date) and have been quite pleased with them. I'd still go Hydra for the right deal though.

    not enough.
Yeah, it's kinda a chicken-egg problem. UT is just getting greedy, unfortunately. The other problem UT has is most of the population is along a single freeway corridor. We NEED to worry about public transportation to avoid urban sprawl. and upward building isgonna have to happen sooner rather than later. Couple that with more focus on our inversion problem and we could become golden. but. you know. money. Housing shortages don't help curently neither. :/ I'm happy to be here but not happy to see unchecked population explosion and all it's associated problems.

LOVE Kurzgesagt. (had to look up the spelling because it's so frkn difficult). But yeah, more industry/wealth/education...less kids.

Dammit... Well, guess it's time to start looking for gravel bikes and an excuse for my wife to let me get one!

I mean you said it, not me! Still going to be ripping the full suspension for when we ride - figure this lets me get more miles and cover ground easier for the weekday rides and such.

Just say its my fault - she should definitely understand with no reservations or qualms.

You got a better tone with your purchase (subjective of course). The 1/1 sound is more akin to the Torch vs that of the higher pitched Hydra.

I like loud hubs and I cannot lie.

Guy I ride with has the Torch, now we'll really sound like an angry swarm in the woods! When I was looking, I almost ended up going the complete opposite direction as I came across a wheel set with the Vespr hubs. They ended up not having the MS in stock, but I did consider it. It would be neat to bomb through the woods and only hear the tires (and of course my fat ass sucking wind)

thank you... I get tired of all the California hate out there. Plus the constant apparent culture of hostility towards transplants is really frustrating and disheartening to see and hear about.

I get tired of it too and I'm not even from there! haha I mean, it's is so crowded because so many people moved TO CA in the first place. I know so many people who bitch and moan about CA and Californians causing their problems and how they hate CA. WTF? It's awesome there!

I don’t think it’s the state or geography they dislike. It’s definitely one of the more beautiful states. Every state has it’s problems, just pick your poison.
