The original 2tr-fe in my tacoma refuses to work well after countless repairs, and I was thinking about swapping it out and buying another engine that I know works well. What other engines are there that can fit the wiring harness and manual transmission without much trouble? I'm having trouble finding a 2.7 from the same generation as my truck. Will one from the previous generation work?

Not sure what you mean by refusing to work well?
I'm not sure about transmission compatibility but the only engine that is going to work properly with the stock harness and PCM is going to be a 2TR-FE 2.7 out of another 2nd gen truck, the 3RZ-FE 2.7 from the 1st gen trucks is different.

I just rebuilt it and it started having the same problems again after about a week of use. No power, low oil pressure, trouble turning on, and a lot of engine noise. I have a donor toyota that has the 2az-fe with the wiring and computer as well but I'm not sure if I'd be able to fit that to the transmission. Any ideas other than putting out the money for another 2tr-fe? They're ridiculously expensive where I live.

Being that the 2AZ-FE is a front wheel drive platform I would say probably not, maybe someone else would know.
