So, it appears the paint behind my 2020 SR5 DCSB is chipping.

It's a weird area to have that kind of defect.

I haven't done anything that would cause this.

It's my daily driver, and only ever sees normal use.

Does anyone else have this on their Taco?

How would you suggest I go about repairing this?

I will be taking it into the dealership later this week, and see what they have to say about it.

Scuff it and rattle can if necessary.

Did you at one point have a bed cover on or do you use from time to time? I have one I put on occasionally when traveling an it rubs slightly against the rail when driving in roughly the same spots and does the same thing, but personally it doesn't bother me.

That bar is easy to remove. I think there are screws under it on both sides? Yes, just rattle can it.

That happens to that rail sometimes. You can unbolt it (torx bolts under the rail) and then repaint it. I scuffed mine 2 years ago with a load, I resprayed the whole thing with texture spray paint.

You can remove it, paint it and reinstall in less time than you'll spend talking with someone at the dealership.

And your drying time will be less than what they hold the truck for *if* they chose to refinish it.

Mine started out exactly like that after removing the factory tonneau cover. After about a year the paint was almost completely gone on the top with no cover or anything rubbing on it. Bought a can of bedliner but ending up buying a used topper and putting it on before I got around to painting it. Brought it up to dealer also and got the usual “not out problem” response and was told to remove and spray paint it. It’s weird before from factory the paint seems textured like a bedliner so you’d assume it would be more durable that it actually is.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I will remove it and paint it as you have suggested.

Dealership said they could contact Toyota Corporate and see what the resolution would be.

However, no telling how long the process would take and no guarantee they would take care of it.

Good choice. There are some things that are better solved on your own dime without involving the dealership to fuck it up somehow.
