I have a 2004 2.4 single cab, and it had an engine light last week. Took it to the shop and they diagnosed the problem and fixed it. I was driving it today and it came back on. I have been driving it for about a month. I thought Tacomas were reliable. The tach is at 143,000 miles, the engine should not be falling apart. Am I doing something wrong?

It doesn't matter the brand, you shouldn't be that surprised a vehicle with 143,000 miles and at 18 years old has the occasional check engine light.

Have you scanned to see what the code was? Do you have any symptoms? Is it possible your shop didn't actually fix the real issue? A check engine light doesn't mean the truck is falling apart.

Yes, you're right. I haven't been driving it that long and I've already had to make several trips to the shop. I guess I'll just keep fixing em. I was told that the engine was rebuilt when I bought it, I guess I assumed there would be no repairs for a while.

"Rebuilt" can mean many different things and doesn't mean everything on it works perfectly, let alone was replaced. If anything it can introduce more potential issues, depending who "rebuilt" it.

Ok, I guess I was overreacting a bit. I'll take it to the shop today or tomorrow. Thanks for the advice man.

Not a problem. Good luck. You can also take it to AutoZone (or similar) and they will read the code for free.
