Nexus and YotaWerx have joined forces to create a collaborative file we've dubbed, Blackhawk. Blackhawk takes Nexus to a whole new level. This tune offers more grunt than thought possible from a N/A engine, and that power continues to impress all the way through the RPM range.
YotaWerx Tuning and Nexus have been collaborating together for several months now on a significant update to our N/A 3.5L Tacoma tunes, a complete overhaul, really. This collaboration brings together a wealth of knowledge, including our expertise with transmission control, and YW's track record with creating high torque output tunes. Many of these concepts have translated very well over to the N/A tunes from the Forced Induction side of YW. Several testers have been trying out this tune, testing it across many climates and elevations, providing daily feedback and datalogs to assist in its development.

This morning, the Blackhawk premium fuel tune was run on the dyno against the stock tune; see below for the dynograph.


Coordination and scheduling to dyno the regular fuel tune is in the works as well, and we're looking forward to the results as even on regular fuel.

Nexus is aiming for a release in June of this year. Blackhawk will be available for all 3rd Gen A/T and M/T configurations. For all current Nexus customers, this will be offered as a free upgrade.

You may notice the stock tune yielded higher peak horsepower while showing nearly identical peak torque, but these numbers aren't what drivers have been craving...
Down lower in rpm, the Blackhawk tune demonstrates significant torque gain below 3800 rpm, which is where it's needed.

Some areas look to have dips in the curve, such as high up in rpm beginning around 5000rpm, this is because the stock tune knocks pretty badly, with KFB values as poor as -7 to -9 seen frequently. -3 indicates no timing being added or reduced and numbers worse than that indicate timing being pulled by the ecu. (No Bueno)

This is why you can have higher numbers, that aren't always "better" for the truck.

The dip seen around 4000rpm is another example of a range where timing advance creates more knock, and so we addressed that there as well. Like on our premium fuel Blackhawk tune, some people may incorrectly claim this is due to ACIS transition. This is due to evening out power and timing advance to provide a smoother tune that pulls stronger because it is not pulling timing as it goes.

Regarding ACIS, just like with the premium fuel tune, by smoothing out the ACIS transition and addressing the dip that accompanies it, that power can be smoothed out, and redistributed elsewhere quite easily. The result is as you see in the dynograph, with a significant torque increase below 3800rpm or so, including an estimated ~20whp/25wtq gain over stock at 3500 rpm, and at 3000 rpm an estimated ~10wtq gain can be seen which is typically quite apparent to drivers' butt dynos.

It is commonly said that dynographs don't really matter, that they're just tuning tools and what really matters is how the truck drives, how the tune feels. This is why tunes aren't developed solely off of dyno runs; they're developed on the street and include days of datalogging, review, revision, and testing across several testers throughout the United States. The feedback is the same: This tune, and its premium fuel version, pull extremely strong and ultra smooth. We are confident that this is something that the community will enjoy very much.

Im from outside USA authorized Vftuner that got a chance to help develop NEXUS.

 

How do your numbers compare to other popular tunes? KD Max for example. Nobody runs stock OVTune anymore lol.

Not saying one is better than the other, just would like to see a more realistic comparison between two top dawg tunes.

I'm glad you asked that question. Here's KDMP 23 hp gains and 13 ft/lbs of torque.
However, we've driven this. We've logged this, we KNOW this doesn't stand a chance.


This one is absurdly high. And instead of just calling bullshit, I'd like to propose a trade. One Gear Locked performance tune for another. KD Group runs our +P Premium, and MWN group runs the infamous KDMax. See if we come up with the same numbers. We could go as far as videoing them to make things spicy!

 

Keep in mind. Our file was dynod on Regular, not Premium.

How many people have thousands of 10s of miles on these tunes? Curious to hear some user feedback.

 

This tune started being developed by yours truly about 3 years ago. I've personally logged about 50k miles on this tune on my own truck. We have close to 10 test vehicles of covering all years. These are all different types of drivers and different builds. My truck being likely the heaviest. We have a tester that's logged 119mph on this and it still has more to give.

 

Yeah but on what iteration? I'm sure some stuff has changed since then. As much as I love tunes, it's nice to get some user feedback on whatever the "final" iteration is.
