2nd Gen DBL Cab Speaker System Recommendations.

I am at the point in my restore where I am considering upgrading my sound system. I know there are probably a few threads on this topic. But I also know that components of this type change pretty quickly in regards to what is being offered and at what price.

I am not interested in a competition-grade system or the such. I do know and like good sound, but on this one, I'm looking for the best bang for the buck if you will. I already have my deck or multi-media unit. So what I'm looking for are suggestions on replacement speakers, Amp & possibly a subwoofer.

All-inclusive kit setups are welcome if they are of proven value. I would like to keep everything in the $600 dollar range. But not saying I want to spend that amount if there is a better value to be had. Also new old stock of older model offerings are welcome if you know of any killer deals etc. I would really appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Also if you know of any other considerations I should take into account for proper fit or function, please share.

 

If you still have stock speakers ANY change will be an improvement. What’s gonna shock you is how tiny the magnets are, about the size of six 50c pieces. I offered mine up for free, no takers.

Dig through crutchfield, be prepared for several offerings to be out of stock.

 

Yeah, I started with Crutchfield just to see what was out there. They are kind of limited on second GEN Tacoma. I see that TacomaHolick has an install video that seems too cheap to be considered but I’m going to give it a closer look. That guy is pretty sensible in his approach to most everything. I’ve learned a lot from his videos so, I’m at least going to give it some consideration. There are so many new brands out since this was my thing back when I was a young man. A lot to learn.

what about this Tacoma beast guy? He has several kits that are ready-made. Does anybody know about this personally?

 

I would suggest to NOT but anything from TacomaBeast. They defaced rocks in public places and they don’t have anything special. All their stuff can be found from other sellers, they are just trashy YouTubers who drop ship stuff and take a cut.

I’m planning to go with a Kicker Key 200.4 amp, Kicker KS component 6x9s up front, and Kicker KS 6.5 2-way in rear doors. Pretty basic stuff but should give good sound quality. As others mentioned speaker stock levels are up and down due to ongoing pandemic, pick what you like and can afford.

Also consider doing sound treatment on the door panels. Noico, Dynamat, Stinger, etc. are popular for CLD layer but there are tons of vendors for this stuff. Not all are made equal. Next level would be adding MLV and CCF layers but it can get expensive for diminishing returns. Pick how far you want to go down the rabbit hole. Personally I’d do speakers/amp/layer of CLD as best bang for buck to get started.

 

Agreed and it's true. I've seen the same sound systems on other sites. The only difference is the logo. Too expensive for my car stereo tastes, and the logo is... I'm not going there. Also, I get sort an uncomfortable feeling watching his videos. Something's not right. As for them being trashy YouTubers, I cannot verify whether that is the case, but if they are defacing anything public they're sure as hell trashy.

Crutchfield, just like everyone else said. Do it Gen-X style: pick up your phone and call them. Put their customer service claims to the test!

I had a Kicker Hideaway installed under the passenger front seat years ago, but just last summer I replaced all the door speakers. Not too expensive and an easy DIY job. I have a stock head unit and no aftermarket amp.

Front door tweeters – Basically your least expensive plug’n play option, with some slight modification to the wire plug. I found the instructions on this board and it was pretty simple.

Yup, I failed to mention this. Wish I had done it when speakers were replaced. When it hits a certain tone I get the coffee can full of nails sound.

 

I think I'm going to go w/ this....4660 seems to fit my desire to flush mount and not have a floating screen. Thoughts on overall parts list?

I have one of the pioneer nex head units, very happy with it. Can’t beat hands free call and text.

Someone posted recently about the scosche and metra dash kits, one is better than the other, I don’t remember which it was, you’ll need to search.

I got the adapter to be able to use steering wheel controls. I don’t know, I kinda wish I didn’t have it now. I don’t ever use them except by accident.

I also added the license plate frame backup camera, which is a game changer. You’d think mounted that low it would be hard to see but it’s perfect. It’s set for always on so like a better version of a rear view mirror.

I was never a streaming music guy. Now I use pandora exclusively, took off the antenna because I don’t listen to the radio anymore. The personalized stations is great.
