Any woodworkers?

Made a sofa table, 51" top x 30" tall x17" deep.

 

Those are pretty similar to what we have minus the aluminum extrusions and the adjustability. Sold as pairs at home depot, they are all plastic, we got two pairs and I scooted one and the leg snapped off the lower support.

 

Putting some spray wbp on the loom, almost done.

So apparently adjustable table leg isnt the right search word at lowes. OooooOooo fancy...leveling glides

 

I'm close to installing the barrel hinges. I just need to chamfer the back edges of the top and bottom to prevent rubbing. Since I had to make the holes for the barrels a bit larger I'm going to need to glue them in. What will stick and hold fast to brass and wood? I'm thinking JB Weld metal 2 part epoxy. I have some of that laying around and used it before, just not in this way.

BTW - the glue squeeze out on the inside lid edge is a bitch to remove. Working on it with a sharp chisel but it seems to damage to the wood as much as it removes glue. Sanding doesn't seem to do the trick. Next time I'll work harder at taping it off.

 

If the barrels are smooth, id rough them up with sand paper for the side that touches wood and use super glue

 

Theres a small window for getting the glue off clean, if you wait too long its basically in the wood. Depending on temp

 

It sounds Ike he's trying to fill a gap because of oversize holes, for that I'd use epoxy.

 

They are fluted, so no worries there. See pic below. Just have to be careful no epoxy gets inside the mechanism. Which would render them inoperable and I couldn't get them out. That would suck hind tit.

Yeah, the box top is glued on then after everything dries you cut off a section that you want to be the lid. That becomes the top. So you don't have access to the inside until then.

Maybe the water activated gorilla glue? Dunno if the hinge/plug has gaps or not, you are in uncharted territory for me, just keyboard quaterbacking here...

Or maybe a silocone rtv for hinges?

 

So is the hole bigger than the adjustment of locking screw?

 

Yes. The problem with the locking screw is it's more of a wedge on one side. When you tighten the screw down, it pushes a piece outward. When it contacts the wall it moves the whole barrel in the opposite direction. Then it's no longer aligned correctly. If the holes were exactly aligned and a very little bit larger than the hinge it wouldn't be an issue. I'm trying to stop the movement by wedging a toothpick in the opposite side. Amazing how one little mistake compounds and grows as you go along.

 

Add aluminum foil?

 

I’ve made and sold some relatively basic furniture in the past. I was just getting into pocket hole joinery when I started to drift away from woodworking and get into rock climbing. Here’s a pic of a table I made for a large size Big Green Egg grill. Cutting the large hole in the top of a perfectly nice table was the most nerve wracking part. Didn’t have a compass that big so I did it a different way. Turned out good. A separate tiny project was a velvet lined box for my Cards Against Humanity set. And lastly a picnic table for good measure. Hopefully it’s still being used in Vermont where I sold it. Woodworking is fun.

Thanks a lot. Unless you count shop class in high school (when it was still offered) I’m self taught in woodworking just like tinkering on the 1st gen Tacoma. Expanding one’s skill set is so rewarding. Although with the help of this forum I supppse I’m not fully self taught in auto mechanics after all

Same for me. I had wood-shop and, believe it or not, plastics class. Hadn't done anything with wood except remodeling since them. It's fun, isn't it?!

 

Same for me, school wood shop and then self taught in everything else. And now I'm a genius because I have YouTube, lol. I'm kind of a jack of all trades but wood working is my favorite thing to do. When I'm in my shop I'm in my happy place.
