I used to do deliveries before gps was much of a thing. The amount of people I've seen in this world who couldn't read a map to save their lives is astounding. The fact that the magic pixies in your phone are right 99% of the time and they can quickly reroute when YOU screw up following their instructions is amazing. Again no tech is perfect, but it's often better than the humans it's replacing.

That brings me back to a response to the famous "you're writing checks that your body can't cash" cliche:

"Then I'm going out as overdrawn on that account as possible."

Don't know anything about Waymo, but GPS navigation is only as good as the underlying map data.

When that map data says a road connects through - but it doesn't really - you'll get routed down a dead end street as happened to me a few weeks ago.

I'm an IT guy. If I had a dollar for every time I was told something would "never" replace another thing, I could probably buy an expensive coffee. I've worked with a number of speech recognition systems. First it was "computers will NEVER recognize human speech, do you know how EXPENSIVE that much processing power would be." Then "read this script into your inexpensive desktop so the computer can sort of understand you." Then "the computer sort of understands you without even reading a script." Now "how the fuck does that computer understand my coworker with an accent so thick I can hardly understand them?!"

Autopilot is coming. Even today's crappy, bug ridden autopilots are orders of magnitude safer than a human driver alone. The day will come when it will be mandated in all new cars. I know that statement will bunch some peoples panties, but tell it to Siri or Alexa.

Sure, new cars but how many of us will be alive when the majority of cars are on autopilot and very few have human drivers. It's going to take a long time. It's not just the cars but the infrastructure itself will need changing. We can barely maintain roads with normal cars.

Some of the DCT boxes are doing just that :D

That said, I'd still take a DCT over a CVT.

First I don't see how road maintenance has anything to do with autopilot. All major car makers are working on some form of auto pilot, and I've not read one single comment about any of them requiring infrastructure changes.

How many cars on the road today don't have antilock brakes? The mandate was in 2012, but long before that the insurance companies recognized its value and started providing discounts for ABS. Autopilot will follow the same path. Does the fact that the shitbox next to me without ABS impact my truck with ABS? Nope, not every car on the road has to have autopilot to make it worthwhile for everyone. Insurance companies will push the adoption of autopilot. They insure my truck and the shitboxes and fewer crashes means fewer claims and more money for them. Even today's buggy autopilots are orders of magnitude better than a human alone and I guarantee you the insurance companies are paying attention.

<just had this question> Don't the new Tacomas come with a rudimentary form of autopilot? I don't know what they call it, but will it apply the brakes automatically so the truck can't rear end a stopped car. And don't they have adaptive cruise control too? That's all autopilot stuff right there. Lane keeping is the next step on that slippery slope.

TSS trucks have very basic lane keeping. It doesn't do much but it is there. I turned all that stuff off in my truck because I'm personally not a fan and personally have a perfect driving record however, I recognize that the vast majority of these system updates are better than the vast majority of human drivers out there and they are always consistent whereas human drivers vary depending on time of day, tiredness, etc etc.

As far as infrastructure goes, a lot of autopilots are on EV vehicles which require much better power generation and charging infrastructure. Also, those cameras systems have a much easier time on roads that aren't patches and pieces and full of potholes that they don't see and slam into etc etc

Now I'm done discussing it. Autopilot isn't for me and I'll die before it ever will, probably.

The rule for cars has been 20 years after it's in a Mercedes it's in most production cars. Average lifespan of most cars 5-10 years. So realistically 10-20 years.
