What attachment system do you use for heavy items on molle panels? People keep telling me straps and clips, but that's not going to work for axes and shovel, so I don't believe them. How did you mount them? (Pics / links)?

Look at quick fist. Personally, I would not mount anything heavy above the hight of the bed rail (don't want your axe hitting you in a wreck).

Straps also work, but are more of a pain. So does velcro wrapped around the item and the molle (using it like a strap).

Is there enough interest to start a "what have you done to your RSI Smartcap lately" thread? Would like to see how folks are pimping their ... cap.

I understand the quick fist part, how are they attached to the molle? Like giant washers and nuts/bolts? Are there special clips that fit one way then turn?
What is the physical mechanism for mounting things to molle so that there is no rubbing / moving within the cut outs of the molle?

Here are some more pics showing the stand-off and inside. I was able to slide all 4 mounts down in the mounts so the hatch opens further. I am able to remove the full sized Viking propane tank and the AE inflatable kayak through the opening with no issues.

But you only need to buy one to get the dimensions and you can then make all the additional ones you'll ever need.

I'm wondering why no one has made a beveled piece of steel that compresses against the holes. Hmm. Maybe I can figure something out.

Why not just stick to the 2 threads everyone is posting in now? It’s not a vender thread nor a sell thread. Everyone is already posting likes/dislikes, mods etc. so basically your already in it

That looks like a grey man tactical product or rip. I have one but never even checked if the rsi molle is compatible- likely not, they seem bigger on the rsi. Wish it was a standard size tbh

    Edit:
    B38DA75D-E12A-4B03-9052-229D876BA7B3.jpg

greyman I believe will even do custom panels- kinda has me thinking how much for 2 panels sized same as the current.

Sure. Lots of the discussion on this thread is about value (is the Smartcap worth the price?), getting the Smartcap (waiting and waiting...) or concerns about factory manufactured features (frozen locks, leaks). These issues certainly deserve their own attention.

I am struggling a bit with using the cap efficiently. There are not many points at which I can mount things, particularly with a Decked system installed. There are a few points that could be used (well nuts in top ribs intended for mounting the Smartcap table, bolts holding latches, some spots in the corners). I am looking for smart ideas about how to rig the Smartcap. One of the great things about the Tacomaworld community is all the terrific ideas that some creative person figures out and then shares with the rest of us.

    Examples:
    1. I want to mount a fire extinguisher in one of the corners. There is dead space there and it is close to the back or side access hatch. Has anyone figured out a cool way to do this?

    2. What about mounting traction boards? Can put them over the windows, but this seems to contradict the logic of a window. Again, with Decked, mounting traction boards on the side of the bed means they stick up kinda high. I was wondering if I could use the well nuts in the top ribs as a mounting point? Has anyone found a cool way to do this?

    3. Fridge: Is there a way to mount one (again with Decked) that clears the back hatch?

    4. Fuel: what gas tanks work best with Smartcap (Roto, Jerry, etc.).

I am sure there are other things that someone has figured out that are terrific and would help the rest of us. Please share!

This thread can be it all
1- some kind of magnetic mount for the voids. Not sure if quikfist has something like that but might be able to fab something up or find something of the like. Not that I’d recommend that for a fire extinguisher though
2- use the table mounting holes if your not getting a table. That’s great use of space just have to get creative. Use some steel flat bar or whatever material of choice.
3- don’t have a decked but this would have to be planned out. Get dimensions of the fridges and don’t forget the slide because you’ll likely want that to pull it out in order to access it.
4- it really all depends on how you want it to mount. Roto does make it easier with their specific mounts but the question is if it will work for you, decked, and desired location.

I dont know how many times I get lost in thought in the back of the truck with a tape. I’m in process of working on mounting for my slide without drilling in bed as much as I can. But I think I’ll have to (2 holes nearest tailgate). Grab a note pad and tape and hop in, take some measurements and get creative. With how new this is your going either be an idea man or have to wait for a idea man

    edit
1- Velcro just not for fire extinguisher either

Use two rare earth magnets placed at 90 degree angles to each other. Magnets hold well on a pull, but tend to slid, in a corner this would prevent sliding. Something like these https://www.magnetshop.com/neodymium-channel-magnets.html#1, I would go for one with more than 50 pounds of pull as they need to hold a load in a dynamic setting.

If you get a square of 1 inch thick plywood (or HDPE, Etc), use a hole saw and cut a hole in the center that is a few millimeters larger than the fire extinguisher. Then cut it in half on a diagonal giving you two brackets. On one side of the semicircle cut a catch, on the other drill a hole (green). Thread heavy shock cord through the hole and size it to hold the fire extinguisher in place when placed over the catch (3/8ths would probably work well). Line the semicircle with some type of grippy rubber. Affix a magnet to each side (red). Round the corner to fit.

Quick Fists can attach with a bolt and nyloc nut through existing holes or additional drilled holes in the molle. Here is my bed from a few years back to show an example.D0768005-A3D5-48BC-BF9B-742E528B7A08.jpg

Hi all, first post. I ordered my EvoSport near the end of December and received it from OffRoad Alliance within about 4 weeks. I'll say I've got a longbed so chances are the stock is much higher than what I'm seeing for the SB version. As far as first thoughts:

    1. I'm right on the coast of VA right now and I've definitely noticed locks freezing over, with all the weather we're getting out here. I've also noticed what seems to be some topical rust on 1 of the locks, but not too worried since I'm on the list for the new locks.
    2. I haven't noticed any leaks from the cap itself, just some from the drainage holes in the bed. Hopefully that stays true, since I did silicon under the plastic caps and butyl taped the large gaps in the front of the bed.
    3. As for mpg, I have seen an increase of around 2 to 3, and I commute about 30 minutes each way on both highway and town. Puts me at a range of 20-22 mpg now.

Sorry for the long post, just trying to put some info out that i wanted to see when i was researching buying this. I'd love to see what people have modded on their smartcaps thus far, and am looking forward to seeing what else we can do with these money pits.

Installed rivnuts and mounts on the passenger side of my RSI Smartcap to hold a RotoPax and water heater. The heater is of course not going to ride there while traveling.
