So I just left work tonight and when I walked to my truck I found that some evil MF had keyed most of my tailgate :-(

It already had some rock chips on it from my neighbors mowing their lawns and rocks flying at the tailgate but now I might as well repaint the whole thing since someone keyed the tailgate too.

Anyone ever have similar damage repaired on their tailgate? how much did it costs?

Vandalism usually falls under comp, doesn’t go against you. Talk to your insurance agent.

I parked at a parking lot behind my job but its a busy parking lot thats always full at night time :-( I always park under a tree too because theres a ledge on my drivers side that way I dont have a vehicle on each side of me. Sadly I dont think there are cameras back there, if there were it would be hard to see who did it since I was under a tree and it was when it was already dark outside.

Happened to me at work came out and found a deep scratch from side to side. Went to local body and paint shop dropped off and had the tail gate fully repainted in factory color for 300.00 cash deal. Came out perfect to this day with clear coat. Opted for no new V6 emblem.

Sadly I dont have full coverage insurance on my truck because I was out of work for a while so I decided to pay off my truck so I dont lose it if im out of work for a long time and I switched my insurance to just basic insurance to save money.

Thanks for the answer, were the scratches totally gone after they repaired it? or still a little noticeable?

Total repaint on outside of tailgate panel with clear coat minus emblem MGM color. No metal was dented. It hurt to pay, however pay once and be done. This was 2 years ago. JUST LIKE NEW. Durans Quality Painting Baldwin Park Ca.

Just out of curiosity anyone know what a new tailgate costs? (just to compare repair vs replace costs).

New tailgate would need painting anyway

If cost is a concern, try having it buffed out first.

Yeah I was unemployed for a while and drained most of my savings while I was looking for a new job. I only recently got a new job, I figured that since im a careful driver I wouldnt get into any accidents but I didnt expect someone to vandalize my truck while im at work since I dont mess with anyone and I dont park like a douchebag (I park within the lines and with the front of my truck facing the outside).

Ah I thought they would come pre-painted in the color that I ordered, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the suggestion, I wouldnt be happy knowing that the damage is still there though, its probably better to cry once and be done with it when it comes to repairing damage lol. I will probably get it Paint Protection Filmed too if i can after I get it repaired and repainted to prevent something like this from happening agian or more rock chip damage in the future.

I'll bet most of that if not all would buff out. Contact a professional detailer or bodyshop in your area before repainting.

Sorry to go slightly off topic but just a thought: what are you going to do if the incident happens again after you pay to fix the truck? Sure it was random?

Unless you’ve got DUI’s or something the amount it costs to make the truck look new again will get you at least 6 months of full coverage.

FWIW I’m sorry for your misfortune, vandals are scum.

Sucks that happened. Need to know who did it so they don’t hit you again.

and if it were me, I would get full coverage ins before paying to get a scratch fixed. Good luck.
