It's not mandatory to provide your contact info to any of these "store clubs". Forego the 2% savings (arbitrary figure for sarcasm) and retain your privacy. As a data analyst I find these things fascinating. Our insurance actuarial department has fantastic prediction models based on terabytes of data, most of which was acquired long before vehicle or phones provided data logging (gasp, pen and paper still tracked customer habits!). Seeing some of their models for behavior is fascinating. To include what I imagine a lot of the outspoken people here would fit the mold of. The real WTF is people thinking big data is somehow tied to the digital age.

I recall a case that I did a paper on in highschool way back when. Guy was grocery shopping and slipped on a wet floor and broke some bones. It winds up in court with the grocery store saying they're not at fault and the guy saying they didn't have anything posted to warn that the floor was wet. The grocery store did not, in fact, have a wet floor sign up. Open and shut case, right?

Nope. The grocery store pulled the guy's shopping history from his club card and was allowed to enter it as evidence. The guy had been purchasing a lot of alcohol every few weeks stocking up (I think it was for a wedding or graduation, he was buying some with every paycheck to spread the cost). The store was able to spin the story enough to pass the guy off as an alcoholic. No breathalyzer test was done at the time of the accident but the store was able to sow enough doubt based off of his purchase history that they wound up not paying out.

Your information is used collected and used all of the time to subtly direct you to put money into other people's pockets. It's not usually a person, it's usually computers programmed to pick up on patterns. I'm not a sky-is-falling type of guy, but it's worth being aware of how pervasive it is. There was a bit of blowback against Target not too long ago over it: https://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmi...egnant-before-her-father-did/?sh=3bb9ba7e6668

If the guy that slipped had a lawyer -- that had to be the worst excuse of a "lawyer" ever. If the same guy (slipping guy) did not have a lawyer, then he was just plain stupid for not hiring one!

It's been at least 20 years since I did the report so some of the details are hazy. I'm pretty sure he did have a lawyer. I'm pretty sure it was a jury trial. The gist of it has stuck with me though; the dude lost because of his purchasing history. I recall the teacher for the class being a bit of a nut job. She told us about microwaving her driver's license so that she couldn't be tracked. We spent quite a bit of time on panopticism in that class and, as nutty as she was, I felt she actually did a good job of getting us to think about things vs taking them at face value. It definitely wasn't what I expected out of an English class.

Google is one of the top 5 most valuable companies in the world. Their number one source of revenue, ads. It's not big brother spying on me I'm worried about. And with echo dot, Siri, Alexa, etc they know what you're thinking about buying, and will target you phone, computer, etc. When you look into things like Facebook experimenting with changing users emotions it makes you wonder if they'd be willing to change people's emotions to a state where they would be more willing to make purchases and then present you with ads. Nah I'm sure they were just doing that for scientific research...

I signed up early when this discount stuff started. I went with false information for a Kroger card and an old old msn email under the same name. Somewhere in Kentucky, someone in Kentucky with the name John McElroy is being credited with my purchases but I get the flat iron stakes at the lesser price.
