These really cut down on the mess/spillage as well. Again, highly recommend it:

Yes I order my filters with Prime.

(That’s what we are talking about right?)

But no I tend to underthink routine maintenance so I slap it in and go.

Considering you only change the oil 40 times over 200k miles(assuming 5k OCI) that’s only 40 seconds over 200,000 miles/15+ years where the engine might be starved for oil. And that’s assuming the engine has been flushed and dried so there is no residual oil left.

I’ve only primed a filter once. It was a mess. So I never did it again.

As a mechanic for a fleet of diesel vehicles, I never fill the oil filter. And some of those filters hold 4 litres. If you have ever pulled apart an engine, you know that the oil clings to the engine parts and requires a cleaner to break the bond. There is more than enough oil clinging to the engine parts to have the system prime when starting.

I use one too. Just remember to twist it closed before you screw it on. Never seen oil pour out so fast. Won't forget again.

So true. It’s why your nitrile gloves are still oily after you try wiping all the oil off them. They’re still slippery.

After the time my 1994 Chevy S10 4L v-6 with its remote oil filter blew one of the rubber hoses to the oil cooler and pumped all the oil out onto the road in a blizzard... I am NOT making this up... and I kept driving it for 15 more miles and had zero damage, I laugh about people priming oil filters.

I worked at a Toyota dealer changing oil for two years and no one primes filters. Don’t overthink it

Just to be fair, qualifying what they do or don’t do at a dealership has been shown here many times not to be necessarily good. Do you realize how many of us pass on the free oil changes from the dealership? Too risky in my book. I’ll suck up the cost, do it myself and do it correctly. In the unlikely event I screw it up I’m good with my own mistakes. What I wouldn’t be good with is having a dealership screw something up when I knew better.

Dropping the skid plate and inspecting and looking around under there I think is a good idea for preventive maintenance while changing your oil, also the canister is in your hand just add oil to it you don't have to top it off completely if your worried about making a mess which in some cases you already did, IMO.

I got Toyota service care with my new truck.
At 5K I am replacing the factory oil with 0w-20 Idemitsu and foregoing free oil changes.

    6112/5160s with Icon stage 2 leaf’s.
That’s what my 92 S-10 with the 4.3 did and it lasted all of 1 mile when it seized up.

Until this last oil change on my 17 I didn’t prime the filter. When I started the engine it showed low oil pressure for just a second or two, so next time I’ll put at least a little oil into the cartridge.

Yeah, I don't know how and why mine didn't seize up. Zero oil pressure for about 15 miles... maybe only 10miles... it's been a long time. It was an old truck when it happened in rush hour traffic jam in a blizzard. I just wasn't going to stop. If it died it died. We were mostly just inching along. Fixed it the next day, drove it for another couple years, traded it in for a very favorable price for my Tacoma. Maybe because I always used Mobil 1? IDK.

BTW, I'm glad my 2nd gen doesn't have that cartridge. I didn't know about that. What was Toyota thinking?

I tried over and over to prime my filter. But after wasting 7 quarts of oil over the course of 2 hours worth of trying, I gave up.

You're doing it wrong. You need to flip your truck over first. Or fire up an antigravity generator in your garage.

I prime mine. Of course at best only half full because the cartridge is longer than the housing. I even primed, (actually just soaked the paper element) the upside down filter on my 05 gen 2….

I agree that it is probably a waste of time but it doesn’t hurt anything. Upside down filters have an anti drain back for a reason. So that the filter doesn’t have to refill the every time the engine is started.

I try to do my own oil changes myself. I have a feeling that a lot of speedy oil change places don’t even touch the filter because it is out of sight.
