Buddy, I'm pretty sure somebody already called you Genius!
Bed cover+RTT and easy to remove/install?
    You are Freaking Genius!
Thanks for the idea and keypoints of design,
I will develop my set up this way.
    Thanks again!

Did mine finally. Bought the ladder on eBay for 60.
Got the tent cot for 100, someone used it one time but was claustrophobic.
Bought a replacement RTT cover with similar measurements on ebay on eBay and some elastic bungee on Amazon and put those 2 together to have an elastic coverIMG_20210714_115144.jpg

I attached it to my DIY prinsu rack using 2"x 5" U bolts
    IMG_20210714_120715.jpg

Attached the ladder using smaller u bolts so I could push it similar to real RTT. Will def help with the setup
    IMG_20210714_121222.jpg

I have to change the mount points so that the cover can get underneath a bit as intended with the bungee.

Also, I have an old memory foam topper that fits perfectly and doesn't add much weight that I have used in this on the ground previously

I'm def having trouble figuring out how to do the cover as the mounts are on the edges, I'm thinking grab wider square U bolts and put 4 points closer to the inside rather than 4 points on the 4 corners

Been trying to figure out an awning solution for the Cabella's cot but been looking into some custom ideas and nothing decent comes to mind.

but has anyone used one of these "teardrop" hatch style thing covers? there are a few i see online for sub $200. 81E-cbiMMRL._AC_SL1000_.jpg
    not the greatest of Photoshops, but on the Cabella's RTT, it seems to work;

That could work. Check out the Slumberjack Roadhouse tarp as well. May give you a few more options.

yeah the slumberjack could work. I'll look into it and see if its a better option overall. I do have a hammock tarp in a similar cut configuration but only 10feetx10feet which i would just need some extra tent poles for.

As much as i rag on it and call it the "Hobortt" (Hobo-RTT) system. it's a sleeping platform and no more. it's a comfortable as a casket but it's a totally solid system to drive across Canada to reach the end of the road. Probably because it was a solo trip. not sure how the experience of it would be had i had a 2nd person
10/10 Will keep it for the journey back home. Wherever home may be, if not the RTT on the back of the truck.

anyone know what the latest greatest temporary option is

if this is smart for moving
might just have to try one of the ones previously listed years ago

moving across the country and very possible the truck bed is going to be entirely full of cargo
but do have a bed rack that could fit an RTT
    hopefully cheaper, temporary, uglier
than what seems like every one that pops up on Google being a minimum of $1k which sounds insane for...a tent...
but hey I guess it's cheaper than a GFC and probably harder to set up than one

    am thinking, drive all day
pull over at night, pop the tent, sleep on top and hope nothing goes wrong

will need to figure out if there is any sort of product from the store,
that can be sprinkled onto loaded trailer, scented
to deter crackheads from stealing cargo while asleep, and where to park to avoid them
I imagine they're more likely to encounter at populated areas like truck stops and rest areas

I could find a solo spot to pull over, maybe drape camo net over the truck if it is cheap
that may hide it but also look scary if seen and get the cops called

if it can be used in the future again, great
maybe sell. Or use for ground
Way I see it, adventure with multiple people > one, and cheaper on gas
it'd be awesome if going wheeling, one person can sleep in the bed
another on top of the rack

Just stay in campgrounds? Not sure what your route is but I did something similar a few years ago and just googled it day of and found plenty of camping options. Ground tent it near your truck.

Maybe yeah. Good option and cheap. Might have shower. Find one each night to stop. Hopefully less crackheads.

quieter nights less semi trucks passing by and risk of getting crashed into asleep or cops checking out vehicle for some reason

Look into KOA Campgrounds. They're all over the US, and I'm sure you could probably find a few along your route. They're reasonably priced usually, have showers, electric, etc.
