Transmission "kicks"

2021 tacoma 2.7 4x4, when I start the truck after it sitting all night, I let it run for a minute or so then put it in drive and coast to the stop sign at the bottom of the hill on my street, when I apply the brakes to stop the transmission downshifts very hard and kicks like a mule. Only 2000 miles on the truck. It's been pretty cold here in Maine about 10 degrees outside and seems like it does it mostly when the truck is warming up. I called the dealer and they told me I need to let the truck warm up completely before driving it which in this weather would take 15-20 minutes, I can't find anything in the owners manual that says to do that. Taking it into the dealer to get checked out, hopefully they don't hit me with some diagnostic fee. The truck is under warranty.....I hope

When you say kick , do you mean downshift ?
Transmissions generally dont kick . I could see a harsh downshift from second into first gear with an agressive clunk .
When you purchased your truck new , did the dealership check the transmission fluid level before you took ownership of the truck ?

There has been problems when the SLT solenoid loses oil pressure . The computer in your truck doesnt see a responce from the slt solenoid and ramps up the pressure causing an ageessive cluck almost like the truck falls into neutral , then back into gear .
In this case , you can watch the issue occuring when connected to a scanner . They may tell you its full of fluid ....I highly suggest you make them check it manually

 

I bought the truck from a dealer in New Hampshire about 2 hours away. I don't know if they checked the fluid in the transmission but ill ask my local dealer to check it when I drop it off Tuesday. Yes it is sort of like a clunk when it downshifts

I wrote down what you said about the SLT solenoid on a piece of paper and asked them to manually check the fluid. Ill put the note with the keys in the drop box tonight, I work graveyard shift so ill be sleeping when they are dealing with it. I operate on different hours lol

 

You will be fine .
I beleive your truck is on warranty up to 30K .
I am no stranger to nightshift , I actually prefer it .
14 days on, 14 days off , 14 nights on , 14 days off .

 

Update - truck was 3/4th of a quart low on transmission fluid
