I was thinking the same thing. A motor swap with new fuel lines and new tank should still be less than a total loss.

Sorry to hear about your sabotage gas incident.

I bought that part# from Advanced Auto Parts (AAP) but a day later, my check engine light came on.

    https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...ing-gas-cap-10504/18481453-P?searchTerm=10504

Removed the lockable gas cap and a day later the check engine light turned off. I'll be returning the AAP gas cap and going to O'reilly's or Autozone...Walmart has a Stant...I'll have to check it out.

My best guess on what happened with insurance is-

    1. They see motor is gone. That's a 6k motor, let's just highball and say 10k with labour
    2. Fuel system, the whole thing. It's gonna need probably 5-7k including labour.
    3. With the rust seen in those photo's I'd guess the techs probably recommended a cooling system be replaced as well. Let's say another 3k here.
    4. Adding misc. stuff, I'm gonna guess total costs came out to 22-23k.
    5. (Assuming a lot of stuff here) Insurance probably saw this, and said "ok, that's half the cost of the truck. We could go either way. We value OP as a customer. Let's just total it, and get OP a new truck. It's gonna cost us the same either way, and OP will be happy that we covered for him, and he's probably gonna renew his insurance with us because we took care of him.
My insurance totalled my 2020 Sierra 1500 over less (monetary wise) damage. They cut me a check for the full value of the truck, and I got a new, better truck (not my Tacoma, work truck).

Good stuff Maverick. I've been with my insurance company for a long time, no tickets, no accidents. Hopefully they were just doing the right thing.

Looks good. Thanks for the heads up. Has anyone tried this on their Gen 3?

It's good that when you really need them they are coming through rather than hemming and hawing, or trying to do it on the cheap. "So, ah... we're gonna Sea-Foam it real good, throw in some injector cleaner and an oil change and get you back on the road. Oh, and when we consulted Toyota, they said this is normal".

yep, the 10504 I got sent to me from O'reilly's online is working good now. I got one from ebay and tried to get one for Advance auto parts and both were counterfeit.

I agree with most of this but not sure why you'd replace the cooling system? No way this stuff would get in there unless they put it in the radiator cap too...

Your original question was about adding a second fuel filter in addition to the sock in the tank. Not certain but I would think that there is a second filter somewhere inline, not just the sock, that is fuel injection specific. Usually a canister type with an extremely fine screen... Just don't know where it's located at in the system.

What would? The cooling system is self contained and doesn't have direct contact with fuel or oil.

This thread motivated me to buy a Stant 10504 for ~17.00 at my local O'Reilly Auto. Last rig was a JKU Rubicon that I bought a locking cap for so I am used to a keyed cap. No biggie. No issues with warning lights; I took the advice of other TW members and made sure to click the cap 3 times so it seals. No issues.
    • I like the idea of a fuel door locking mechanism (my dad's '87 Saab 9000 Turbo had one and here it is 2021 and my Taco doesn't have one??? SMH)
    • The level of effort is a bit much for my taste when I can pay 17.00 for a locking cap
    • A fuel door and tail gate controlled by the door locks should come standard on the TRD trim levels in my opinion. I'll let Toyota's engineers know when they ask for my feedback.

1 way I could see cross contamination is that the head gasket was also attacked by the corrosive agent

Also I don't see an extra particulate filter offering any real protection under these conditions of a corrosive being added to the system. You would need a chemical neutralizing filter (think water treatment system)

The buildup on that piston looks like melted plastics to me. I suspect that the plastics in the fuel stem were leached out and held in solution to get through the injector then deposited out from the combustion

For sure a blown head gasket could cross containment them. But in the pics the gasket is in tact and the water jackets are clean.

Also a good point that may be plastic. Wonder what the exhaust valves look like? And why were some of the cylinders more affected than others? Weird and shitty all around for OP.

Would you bet more than $20k on that? I was thinking the same thing as @CraigF We can't see the scope of all involved in just those 2 pics but I know one thing for sure, I sure wouldn't want that truck after the fact and have to deal with the potential after effects that could pop up. :annoyed:

Depends on where you live, my friend. Here in Texas, that would fly just fine so long as you caught them in the act. I'm not so sure I agree but hey, they shouldn't have been doing it in the first place.

The granular material probably dissolved in the fuel. That's how it passed through the sock filter on the fuel pump. I suspect an inline filter won't offer any additional protection. Just get the locking cap and, if you want to make the extra effort, do the locking door mod.

Not sure. My brain just started naming things that had engine related liquid in it. I guess it possible that rust would’ve seeped in somewhere and they wanted to be safe.

I just think insurance saw an coming massive mess of the truck not running right, and them having to replace part after part, and decided they’d just do OP a solid and replace the whole truck. Makes OP extra happy as they helped him out, they don’t spend that much extra with the higher amount the truck will fetch at auction.
