The airbag system has codes that can be read just like the engine, those should tell you why the light is on. Not sure the regular auto zone reader can read it, I’d have to go look how to figure that out.

Very doubtful that the steering wheel change will fix it, it could just be a loose wire.

Thank you - much appreciated. So I have no other recourse than going to the dealership - correct? Leith, Fred Anderson and Mark Jacobson.

I would try autozone or oreilly. I’ve seen an option to read airbag codes in my scan tools, so that might work. Alternatively, I think there is a procedure for getting it to flash the codes.

Thanks! I'm keeping this truck, so I've made a concerted effort to approach any necessary repairs, with a sense of urgency.

You can read my comment in the thread link above. For whatever reason, mine has not come back for almost year. I am going to get around to cleaning that ECU connector and cleaning the ground points....one of these days.

You have autozone store in your area? If so, go there and they diagnose it for free. They will tell you whats the problem.

Code readers won't work on a 1st gen for the SRS system.

Unfortunately, a simple code reader option is not available for 1st gen Tacomas with SRS.

You need to find a digital copy of the FSM. There are links floating around here if you search.

    upload_2022-2-4_11-4-42.jpg

There are many pages dedicated to the SRS, but the page on how to read potential codes is the Pre Check page. Similar to the ABS codes, you have to jump two pins, read out the light blinks, and then follow the procedures on the other pages.

Doing anything with the air bag system should be done carefully- you don't want one to go off in your face accidentally.

This was their conclusion to fix an airbag light?

Get it scanned somewhere! My 2015 Tacoma had the SRS indicator light turn on just last week. After scanning, turns out the passenger seatbelt switch was bad. I removed it and there is a little transistor on a circuit board that died. I found an OEM replacement for $35.

The bad transistor was inside the highlighted cover. $35 included everything in the picture. Anyway, getting it scanned is ideal as you should be able isolate the issue. There's a lot of little electronics that could potentially go bad, even in a 1999 vehicle. Best of luck.

They suggested cleaning your fuel injectors to try and fix the airbag light? lol

Get yourself your own code reader. They're fairly cheap and worth their weight in gold.

I got a fairly basic blue tooth OBDII reader off Amazon and the Torque Pro app ($5) for my phone.

EDIT, I forgot the SRS system isn't read by the OBDII readers, so as stated above, you jump a couple wires and read a blink code.

Still get yourself a OBDII reader though...
