    Did I say anything like:
"Do you just go "Nope, it's not 4k, not buying it"... then walk off?".

    No. Absolutely not.

A person has the opportunity to check out any feature on a vehicle well before purchase. If they find any particular item not up to par with their expectations, it's up to them to decide to purchase the vehicle or not. Simple as that.

If they decide the rest of the vehicle is still worthy of their dime and decide they can just upgrade that part sometime down the road, so be it. If upgrading isn't in the cards, or outside their means, that's life. No different than tires, speakers, seat covers, floor mats, head/tail lights, etc.

If they start a thread more or less complaining about the inferior quality of something that they feel should be better than it is, seems silly.

Wouldn't a question of which camera upgrade options are available for the 20XX Tacoma to improve the clarity be a better approach? I would say so, you?

On a side note, was there a rule somewhere stating that I have to agree with any OP opinion in order to give my view on their thread?

Mr Montana, you also have the same privilege in not being required to read my responses as you clearly disagree with my view, so as you suggest....go ahead and skip it.

    Seems like a good question.

I’ve looked into this a little bit. The way the camera mounts to the tailgate handle is very specific. I am a little bit tempted to buy a spare handle and try to put together some sort of adapter and see how nice it looks. That’s the key hurdle I think. Once you can get a newer 6v camera in, the harness is easy since the intercept is right there at the bumper.

I have a little bit of hope that someone might make a solution. There is a tailgate handle for first gen Tundra which I own and think looks nice and performs well. It was $150 though so quite a bit more than the price of a camera plus the price of a handle.

ETA: Looks like there is at least one. Just needs to be hacked to mate with the plug. Very doable. No specs on the camera itself though and I bet it’s 12v. Probably solves the image quality issue though. So a quick 6v relay to switch on battery power and it’s good to go. Downside is you lose the “TOYOTA” letters.

Actually, thinking a bit more, those mounting holes might line up with the OEM handle too. Allowing a pure camera swap. I may order this and see.

What I’m really after is this but for 3rd gen.

Maybe this but not sure if it’s the same camera as oem. One of those odd times when you hope for aftermarket.

I installed a new head unit last week that used the factory camera and I was amazed at how much improved the rear camera view has improved. The improvement is unreal.
