    Hello All,

I have a 2020 Tacoma TRD-Offroad access cab with automatic transmission. I have 17" wheels with 33's on them. I took it into Toyota for the 20,000 mile service and they confirmed it had the latest transmission TSB software update. After the 20,000 mile service, I had a very reputable 4x4 shop install rear Nitro 5.29's. I performed the 500 mile break in as instructed and had the same shop do the rear diff oil change. The mechanic said everything looks good and I coould drive it like normal. Here is the issue. Upon hard acceleration (100% pedal to the floor) there is a significant pause between gear shifts. It seems like hours, but is probably a solid 1 second delay before shifting. It seems the shorter gear ratios cause the rpm's to go into redline and the engine does what it does to prevent damage. Thus the pause. When I acelerate at say 95% or less, there is no pause between shifts. Before the gear job, there was no hesitation between shifts. Is this something I have to just deal with or is there a problem? Did the 4x4 shop do something wrong or is my computer unable to adjust to the new gears? Is this a common problem or am I lucky enough to be the only person to have this problem after spending $3,000 for a rear gear job? All responses are welcome and appreciated.

I'm not sure of the process, but did the shop recalibrate for gear changes?
You mentioned twice rear gear did they not change the front gear to the new same size? That would be very bad when you go to use 4wd.

    Oh look, another mod....

The "pause" is all part of the charm our Taco's have. We all have it (or had it). As mentioned above, you can go the route to get your truck tuned. You can also choose a Sprinter Booster or Pedal Commander. They're plug-n-play options, and are about $300. I'm not sure what the price is for the tune. All three options will fix what ails you though.

I have the Sprint Booster and once it was installed, NO more lag or pause between gears. The truck shifted/accelerated very smooth.

Not sure what you mean by recalibrate. The shop and Nitro said my max speed would be 86 MPH and as of yet there was no software out there to go above that speed. Maybe that has changed in the last couple months. Yes, I did do the rear and front. My bad, should have clarified that.

I had no lag between gear shifts before the gear job. Yes, there was a pause when first pushing down on the accelerator, but no shift lag after that. I did borrow my friends Pedal Commander and it does elimiate the inital lag but it still hesitates between shifts.

Well, i don't have any transmission issues, my trucks all stock with the latest tsb tune....my trucks shifts spot on smooth, and crisp. If a lag that transmission isn't working right.

Noticed this in mine as well with 4.88 gears. Only seems to do it when accelerating hard from a stop, and has done it twice. Rolling it hasn’t happened. Have to believe it’s the gears.

A sprint booster or pedal commader has nothing to do with the transmission shift points or how firm it shifts. It only works with the gas pedal and how senative you want it to be. Get a KDMAX Pro tune and see if it helps. I'm sure a tuner will work with you to see if it helps. The shiftpoints have changed because of the tir size and now new gears.

I think once one deviates from the stock gear/tire configuration these trucks come with it really mess's up the automatics learning how the factory made it to have. Kind of makes sense how my buddies trd behaved after the 3'' lift and 33'' tires. Add this to how some of these trucks already run sub-par, you'll get disappointed owners screaming for a better tune.

Yeah, to be honest - I’m not laying down 0-60 times in the regular so it’s not something that really impacts me much. A tune with shift logic wojld fix it. Still planning on moving forward with the maggy s/c and hoping that tune will.
