I am actually trying out the cold air intake to see what it will do to my fuel economy. Dont care much about power gains since this truck would need a whole lot more than bolt ons.

sound is good to, I like sounds

If this were true, we wouldn't see new debates pop up on the internet every stinkin' day. Somebody would just post a link to some article in Wikipedia and that would be that. Much like whether the world is round or flat.

As for myself (semi old but very grumpy) I believe in aftermarket CAIs. Installed one on a GTI with the 2.8L six and the difference in pull could not be missed. I had a short uphill as part of my daily commute and, where I would slowly lose speed in 3rd gear (thus forcing a downshift) with the stock airbox, I could then hold 3rd as the motor confidently pulled the car upward after just a CAI install. This was not high RPM as the GTI's six was pretty torquey and not related to 'throttle response'.

Stock air filter systems are NOT engineered with only the maximum power output as a consideration. They have to work in things like sound levels, emissions mitigation, serviceability (most people are not wanting to wash and oil their filters every 3 months), and engine protection in order to provide a workable warranty, and probably some others that I haven't thought of. Enthusiasts, who have a narrower focus, are happy to ignore some of the shortfalls of an aftermarket CAI in order to get at least a bit less restriction and restriction matters. Especially at elevation, which isn't being discussed much here but is yet another factor.

Tacomas don't benefit from them in fact very few vehicles do imo. There are many studies that prove it. Take a look around.

No I have not gotten to that point yet. I still have 2,000 more miles worth of fuel economy data that I would like to get before I add the intake.

Not sure about all this non-sense but CAI's ALONE will provide minimal hp/tq increases on these trucks and maybe a half a mpg BUT measurable. Throttle response and sound is enough to make people happy though.

PAIRED with an exhaust and TUNED things get interesting and will supplement hp/tq/mpg growth proven by dyno numbers (check around)

These engines were tuned with a specific set up in mind and a CAI that pulls from the stock source will only allow air to move more easily through the intake. The ecu needs to be re-tuned to use the less restricted intake to it's full advantage.

I believe that at WOT the engine goes into open loop and some of the nannies that keep the engine in line are disengaged along with the additional requested air allowing you to feel the CAI then.

If I wanted a faster truck I’d have bought the Chevy. My buddies Colorado walked away from my Tacoma.
