Any woodworkers?

Built a floating shelf for the laundry room over the weekend. Not sure if i wanna add another coat of stain or not.

 

Can you use a water-based Poly over a oil-based stain? Are oil-based products better than water based?

 

Thanks! Just wasnt sure if you should be consistent with them or if it didn't really matter.

Also thanks for clarifying how stain is absorbed by the wood and your not coating it like paint. Sorry for my newb language. So, do you typically just do one application of stain before Poly?

 

Well let me tell you about my woodworking failure.
Ok bought a cool spherical chandelier with 4 dimmable led lights that look like old Edison bulbs.
Installed. Wooooo this is awesome.

Whoa, this thing is too bright.

It is great sitting down at the table, but if you stand up it is blinding

I have a huge amount of veneer. I will cut 1/16th strips of cherry, and use some pretty limba veneer to make a shade.

It all went well until assembly. I only had one template for the rings. So I slowly glued and activatored the first ring in. The plane was to slip the center ring in the shade, then leave it loose, glue in the bottom ring and then glue in the center with slow set glue.

I made the shade slightly cone shaped by mistake.

I put in the center ring in no problem.
The bottom ring, not so much. I thought just a tiny bit of stretch is all it would take. Got it fitted, then the veneer ripped all the way around.

It is a very beautiful disaster.

MKII will be better, but I expect I will need MKIII before I am happy.

Anyway. I screwed up and went down trying. The test fit with one ring was awesome.

Hey man, has anyone spoken to you about Transtint dyes? Water or Alcohol soluble, mix in to almost anything. Incredible colors, and you can mix them to any tint. Cheap effective, and removable until topcoated.

Also my opinion on poly.
Just my opinion.
Feels like plastic, looks like plastic, scratches easy, and I just dont like it.
Rubio monocoat is my goto finish, shellac thinned to 1lb cut, padded on with a bit of mineral oil to smooth the several quick layers it takes. ( look up french polish and think on how to use the information, not necessary to go all the way to have a amazing touch me finish)
I sometimes use boiled linseed, or danish oil.

Again just my opinion, but if you try rubio monocoat you will love it.

Not yet, I hung it on the belt/disc sander and went in the house.
Came back later and sprayed more veneer with softener, and put it in the press to soak.
May try again tonight.

haven't been to this thread in a while. home sick today and bored, so here I am. anyway, I guess ill post up some stuff I've made in the last few months.

 

to be sure! had a .5" of walnut sawdust caked on my legs when they were really sweaty. I was milling in the back of some woman's yard trying to *help* her get rid of the tree that fell in a storm. stuff sat on my legs for probably a couple hours and when I got home I noticed it gave me blisters that eventually peeled. looked like burns.

 

Think what that's gonna do to your lungs then!
