UPDATE: called tirerack again and got a different person. His best guess was this size is currently backordered through General Tire and/or they have taken a break from making this specific size. He said that his system is showing he is getting more in stock and there are more shipment coming in the future. They may still become out of stock, let’s say a year from now but they are not going to be discontinued. I ended up buying 4x of these tires and will be receiving them tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who participated and tried to help.

Crosspost from wheels and tires for visibility, not sure if this is ok if not a mod you can delete the thread.

I have been strongly considering the general grabber ATx tires in a 265/70r16. I will be using my truck (2022 Tacoma trd off road DCSB!) as a daily driver mostly, with light off-roading, and will be towing a 5x10 trailer (firewood) fairly often during the summer. I live in an area where it’s ideal to have studded tires but that is very expensive so I’ve been researching decent all terrain tires that can work year round for me. Roads get icy and I understand a non-studded tire can’t be amazing but some (like the ATx) can give me confidence on the roads. I’m currently in a FWD hatchback and have never had issues on the roads here since on this vehicle I have my summer set and a studded winter set.

Since I’m 80% settled on this specific tire I’ve been looking at where to buy them. No one has these tires in 265/70r16, except for tirerack. Even General tire’s website doesn’t show they make them. The questions I have are:

    1) What’s going on here?
    2) Does tirerack have bad information?
    3) Did they buyout General tire then this specific size get put on hold?
    4) Did General tire stop making this size? If so I’m kind of fucked if I blow a tire it would seem.

I’m currently waiting on a response from general tire and if I get information from them I will post an update.

    Thanks

I have no information on that size tire. I did order the same tire in265/75/16 from Tire America without any difficulties. Good Luck

I wanted those tires. I ordered those tires in 285/70/17 in November 2021 from Tire rack. They were backordered until January 17th 2022. That day, I got an email that they are still backordered now until April 2022.

Found another vendor that had the same tires in the size above in stock. I confirmed 3 times that they had at least 12 in stock before I ordered. So I ordered them. And I cancelled my tire rack order. 3 days later without warning I get another email from the second vendor that my order was cancelled because the warehouse they use made an error in the amount of 285/70/17 ATX tires they had in stock.

    I was livid.

I don’t think upsizing would be too bad, but I would highly prefer to keep the stock tire size though. Also the 265/75r16 comes in an E load tire and weighs 53lbs, vs the 265/70r16 in an SL load and weighs only 39lbs. Pretty massive difference and I don’t think I’d be fully utilizing the E rating and it would be an initial waste in investment and long term waste for fuel mileage for my use case

Did you originally want them in the 265/70r16 or your 285 size? I’m specifically looking for the OEM tire size and they’re pretty much unavailable everywhere (in this very specific size) including General Tire’s site except for tirerack - which is what is sketching me out

I would recommend ordering them on the phone with the person. Get their name etc in case what happened with me happens to you. Hopefully not but you never know.

I’m going to ask them how/why they have this size when General Tire doesn’t list this size as available on their own website. That’s my main concern - making sure I can replace 1 tire in the future if needed. They’re also available on tirerack and they have a decent 2 year warranty that comes when you buy a set

With everything going on right now, I'm nervous of the event that heaven forbid I need a replacement tire and they're backordered, again...

    Ridiculous
