You can simply turn it off instead of buying an older truck. OP, in my opinion this is not a valid reason to seek out an older model.

In most cases, I would agree...
I would have went for new... but the color I wanted is no longer offered... Color was extremely important to my inner happiness.

The 2017 has the record for highest mileage version, so it is the best....:crapstorm:

Isn't the 3rd gen record holder a 4 cylinder? :crapstorm:

Holy Christ. $23.5k for that many miles???

2017 TRD OR here bought new 12-2016.

Only had the third brake light recall (no leaks) and that was it. Rock solid. My teenager DD now and I don't need to explain "teenager driven" to anyone.

I also tow my trailer with it, HD runs, etc. No issues whatsoever. I even checked for the diff leak a few weeks ago, all good. YMMV of course but I can report 2017 has been good.

At 84k miles most the problems its going to have, have already happened. You really should be getting "new" issues with that many miles on it. Do a test drive and see if it has any evident problems, if it does tell the dealer to fix before you by.

It is up to you, but if you get a 2018 or newer, most of the early issues with 2016 and some 2017s were fixed, plus you get the adaptive cruise control, pre-collision, lane departure and auto bright light control, standard, even on the SR models. Just something to consider.

I have a '17 4X4 TRD Sport, 6 cyl / 86K on the clock. Bought new. No issues. I tow = 2 sets of tires and front brakes.
If this truck meets your other needs, you will likely drive it for many, many trouble free miles.

Transmission is good, Engine is good.
Not so sure of the combination of the two but there is a cure for that in the form of an aftermarket tune that will make you and the truck happy.

    Check out KDMax.

    Work in progress...
I have the 2017 TRD Sport 4x4. The transmission hunted for gears like an old lady looking through her purse. And the truck seemed under powered for almost 300hp. I got the KDMax Pro Tune about 3weeks ago. Oh my gosh! New Truck all together. No Way, but Yes Way. I am still amazed when I step on the gas and the gear hunting is just gone. Gone all together, I don't work for the tune people or anything, but dang I have to say they got that tune dialed in.

I drive a 17 for work and haven't had any issues; it works fine for work, but isn't what I'd buy for myself. I own a 2020 for myself, and having compared both a definitely prefer the improvements of the 2020+ trucks, such as the larger screen with Carplay and powered driver seat.

I recall 2017 being the most sought out model year. Most 1st year issues ironed out, and non of the 2018 and above "hold-my-hand" electronic nannies.

I also happen to have a 2017, so not bias or anything...

I'm a 17 and I'm about to roll over 150k mi . I'm original owner and have not had any major issues. Going in today for second transmission service . Also getting brake fluid flushed for first time too.

Yup, the later models had another set of issues. 2017 is perfect in every way, even performance so it appears, as mine does not have the power problems.

Thanks everyone! I have for now decided to run my 2012 at least till the end of year. Gonna save up some money and maybe see about a new one. Plus the dealer wasn’t gonna give me more then 11,000 for my truck and didn’t want to deal. So I said see ya!

Pretty bad for a dealer to give you only 11k for a truck they will likely sell for 20k. Gotta love it how dealers want to rape you on both ends of the deal. Good choice on keeping for now. Of course all the years of 3rd gen are proving to be reliable. I see high mileage on these trucks and I am impressed. The 3rd gen is proving to be as reliable as any toyota truck of the past based on current numbers. So if the right deal pops up, I would not hesitate. On this forum alone there is a ton of high mile trucks. just look at these posts I quoted from others
