What are these end peices on the front of the frame for ?

I have a 2022 Taco and was watching a guy remove the "end pieces" on the front of his tacoma frame to attach some brackets. What are these end pieces for ? They are boxy looking rectangles that slide into the front cross piece of the frame under the front bumper area. They are held on by one bolt. I'll attach a picture of one attached and then with the guy holding it.

 

I believe they're required to widen the frontal area for some arbitrary NHTSA collision code.

 

LOL That was my brother that posted that LOL ! We were both talking about it last night. I didn't know that he made a post about it.

 

Took mine off and plugged the open ends with Square one caps, looks much better.

 

Anti whistle blocks?

I have no idea.

 

As you can see from your first image, they provide some measure of protection to the steering components (so you might maintain control of the vehicle) in the event you strike some object...

 

Had to remove them when installing my front receiver.
