No. I don't want a manual transmission that's not connected to an engine.

Why would an EV even need a transmission?

Manual transmission on an EV makes absolutely no sense at all

Kind of my thinking too. Just thought I would share the Toyota patent story.

One might hope Toyota will be keeping manuals around for ICE, if Toyoya thinks there is a future for manuals in EVs.

I love that they're trying to make manuals relevant, but this is not the way.

    A manual transmission.

    For an electric motor.

That's like having a 200w amplifier built in to a sensory deprivation tank.

I'm interested how a "transmission" for an EV motor would work...would it interrupt the power to the motor for a couple milliseconds to make it feel like a shift?

It depends how it drives. I am interested to learn more about this. Jeep already has a manual transmission EV wrangler in the works last year. I look forward to checking it out. One can only hope to keep the manual alive!

    Save the manual!

Oh good, no range and no power exactly what I want.

Honestly this feels more like Toyota late to the party on technology per usual grasping at straws as to what might possibly become a thing and take off and is trying to do a more general patent so they can claim royalties, sue, or whatever if anyone else tries but not something they would actually do themselves.

    Seems kinda ridiculous on principle.

The first Teslas were two speed during prototypes.
I think Porsche has a two speed operating now.
Smaller motor would have more range with the same charge and battery.
In addition, cooling would be less too.
The torque/power of an electric motor is a big range, but gearing it could improve both low and high speeds and torques.

Yeah a friend has a VW Karmann Ghia with a EV swap that retains the combined transaxle I suppose it all depends on how Toyota does it but honestly I'd like to see a motor on each wheel and long rage light weight super capacitor lithium sulfur batteries or whatever is better before I consider EV.

Yeah, me too. If you add a gearbox you lose efficiency. However, you gain a bunch of other things.
Maybe a Tacoma with 700 lb ft of torque at 1 rpm and a top speed of 200 mph lol.
