My wife is working up to retirement and she dropped to 3 days a week but the others can’t keep up with her workload so it’s like 5 days in 3…
There is a plan for her to work insurance part time from home after retirement..
So no dealing with people…..

I agree force them to deal with it. Do it in a nice way but tell them you’ll work 2 days until a certain date. Tell ‘em on that date you are done. You’ve done your part now it’s up to them to do their part and do what’s right. That’s very poor management that they weren’t prepared on the date you we’re supposed to terminate.

 

Because they know the old timers have old school morals…

 

I’m willing to work 2 days a week for this year, but still have to have someone takeover the lead for my projects it can’t be done on a 2 day week. Agree I will have to be firm about assigning a new lead engineer.

 

lol I can relate to getting a call on a past job. I got a call around 3am one night the plant was having issues with a system I was an expert on. Funny part is I had left that company 2 years earlier lol! I did give some advice and they were apologetic about calling and I understood.

Sounds like your wife is in the same boat I am, hope she’s able to stick with her plan as well!

This was a weird snow here. There was 4" on the porch, 6" along one side of the house, and spots on the driveway that were completely bare. I used the snowblower or the shovel -- or nothing -- depending on where I was at the moment.

I dropped my workweek from 5 days to 3 days quite a few years ago. As some have noted, workload doesn't always fall alongside those reduced hours, and that is what happened to me. After a few months I said "pay me 4 days/week since I'm working 5 anyway" and that is where it stayed. At first it was a tough transition because of the workload, but over time that got a lot better. I have no regrets other than perhaps hanging it up altogether a couple of years sooner!

If you're collecting SS I'm pretty sure there are limits to how much income you can bring in, above which they chop your SS down. (Googlegooglegoogle) Yes indeed but it only applies to folks who have not yet reached "full retirement age" of 66 or whatever it might be for y'all. After that you can earn as much as you please and still get the full SS amount.

 

My full retirement age for SS was 66 and I’m a year and 6 months past my full retirement now so good to go now!
Yeah Dave I have a concern about not retiring soon enough as well, don’t want to regret not doing so. Want to give 2 days a week a try and see if it’s good enough for 2022. 2023 I want out for sure haha.

I went out about a year early, too. Retired at 65 + 3 months. We calculated it out and at age 84 I start to lose money by going early. I'll take those odds - always a believer in the concept of money now is worth more than money later since my investments will outpace the additional SS dollars I'd get by waiting. Of course, it was all made easier by having my Army retirement check each month, plus Lynn's SS and retirement funds. We were talking to one of our investment guys a few weeks ago and he asked if we wanted/needed to take more each month. Nope. We're doing just fine. Feeling really blessed.

Retired at 52, now 68. A couple of years later got talked into managing a new retail store. Fired for building their customer base by telling customers the truth and doing what was necessary to make them happy even if it meant working with competitors. (Sales tanked when I left, store hours cut and half the employees let go) Took SS as early as possible. Wife retired at 60 and took retirement as soon as she could. We generally bank about 20% of our SS a month because I'm always wheeling and dealing in some kind of way. Farmer mentality. Small time entrepreneur, buying/selling, whatever keeps me active. Slowing down. Five years ago I would have poured my own damn concrete and dug the trench for the electric by hand. Now I take too long and am getting lazy.

 

I retired at 65. Gave the company 6 months notice. Submitted my letter on April 1 and stated that it was not an April fools joke. I was a VP in charge of over 100 people. A very demanding position which I enjoyed until a couple years before I retired. I gave the company suggestions for good candidates to take over my job. They did nothing until a couple weeks before I retired and then ignored my suggestions. Asked if id hang in another 6 months. The answer - NO. I left 2 days after i retired on a month long vacation/travels my wife had planned. When I got back they asked if I’d work part time as a consultant NO. I was fortunate I worked 23 years and 17 years for two different Fortune 500 companies in management and they had very good retirement pension programs. So with 2 pensions, SS mine and wife, IRA’s, 401Ks and investment portfolio we actually have more after tax money than when we were working and for the most part don’t take $$ from the investment portfolio.
My only regret is that I didn’t retire sooner. I love retirement!

 

Smart move Ken, I need to learn to say no as well! It’s like they try to pretend you’re not retiring until it actually happens and then they can’t ignore it any longer. Glad you’re well set for retirement, only fair you get to enjoy it.

Only difference between us retirement wise is when I fully retire I’ll be living out of my Tacoma down by the river eating potted meat on saltine crackers the way the stock markets been going. But I’ll still be happy!

 

Part of the reason my wife planned a month of travels 2 days after my last day was so they couldn’t get me back, I was incommunicado for a month. Actually down by the river with a fishing rod in my hand sounds pretty good. I may join you.

 

Retired in 2019 at 59...living well off of pension right now. Enjoying the grandchildren and backyard farming and can't wait to start traveling again. Went back to work last fall to finish up the last project that I was working on when I retired...I told them that they should have called me 6 months earlier...it would have been easier for both myself and the project.

Retirement. I asked my wife to retire early, 61, then she got SS at 62. My VA and SS easily covered the year.

Evening all:
Just saw where a 72 year old woman fell, hit her head, and died on a local hiking trail today which they had shut down due to several previous deaths and multiple injuries where people needed to be rescued. It's a steep, slippery, rocky trail that follows a small stream with several waterfalls that goes up the backside of a mountain, beautiful but deadly! We had maybe 2" of snow, and there was probably some ice along that trail, it said she was part of a group of 22 people who belong to a hiking club from Philadelphia, I doubt if they even had a clue as to how treacherous that trail can be especially at this time of the year. Unfortunate but DUH!
