Has anyone ever flat towed the Tacoma? Everything I’ve researched says it’s not recommended by Toyota, but there has to be a way.

You'd have to disconnect the rear driveshaft to avoid damaging the transmission. Not terribly difficult but inconvenient.

If it can idle why not just drive it?

    a) waste of gas
    b) damage done to your trany will not be covered under warranty if/when they find out you flat towed it

A Driveshaft disconnect is a worthwhile investment for this

We install high racks on them and take them to Mexico to hunt out of and most of the time we have multiple vehicles. Instead of trailing them it would be nice to tow it.

Put a Tow Bar on it, uncouple the Rear Driveline at the Axle and go.

This may be a totally stupid question, but what's wrong with a UHaul auto transport trailer?

    Check build thread!
U-Haul probably won’t rent one for that big of a vehicle. They wouldn’t rent to me when I was looking to tow my Volvo S60. I ended up buying my own car trailer.

I've seen a Toyota trans fail even while it was idling in neutral.

    Remove driveshaft.

For that kind of drive I’d think pulling the drive shaft would be the cheapest way to get the job done. About 15 minutes tops and eight fasteners if my memory is correct. If you needed to disconnect for any reason along the way you could safely drive for a bit with the truck in 4hi and just be FWD only.
