May be a dumb question but are their any black stealth studs for studded winter tires ?

Have to drive into an area that don’t allow studded occasionally and while my Hakka r3SUV’s are good I miss studded.

Any coating on a stud would soon wear off and be visible. Studs made out of a solid black material would be less effective than a typical alloy (chrome vanadium or tungsten carbide?). Beyond all that, even camo'ed studs would be easy to both spot and hear.

On the opinion side, if they are not allowed, why try? I was pretty impressed with Blizzaks on a FWD car. I could not imagine how great they would be on a Taco. Hakkas have to be next level?

Yea. I have Hakka r3 on my gen2 and Blizzaks on my gen 3. Both great but nothing beats studs on straight ice.

only in non studdable territory for a couple days a week. Oh well

I agree that on sheet ice, studs are the best option. That said, I mistakenly commuted on ice a few times with my bike. It took until afternoon to un-pucker and obviously a bit longer to re-evaluate my weather assessments.

With the ice that we had here the last two winters, I was at least impressed with my three-peak rated ATs for communicating the conditions well and getting some grip.

Please don’t get me started on winter rated AT ‘s lol. I’ve had Wildpeaks, K0’s and Open Country’s all winter rated. None lasted past Nov.

I am not saying that they are dedicated winters. I noted my experience there.

For what I need them for, including playing in mountain snow at times, they have done well enough and better than expected.

The snowflake don’t mean much anymore imo now they giving it to “ All Weather” and AT’s.

a tire like Michelin Defender LTX MS not winter rated likely because of the compound does better than above

Again, I understand all of that and based my choices on that knowledge. I am not saying that AS, snowflake, or three-peak mean anything appreciable without other factors, except that it can avoid some tire check hassles on the passes.

We had dedicated winters because AS didn't cut it for safety. Things have changed, so we don't have dedicated winters for now.

Got it. Thanks for reply above. Makes sense. No strong black alloy and coating wears off.

Guess I’ll have to obey the law
