I bought my 2006 tacoma a couple of years ago with money I saved working summer jobs when not at school. I made a stupid mistake when changing the oil on my own in the dark last night. I drained my transmission fluid thinking it was the oil pan and overfilled the engine oil. I drove the vehicle into town and on the way back noticed shifting wasn't normal.
I have now completed changing the oil correctly and filled the transmission fluid. Engine seems fine. I can put in drive and it seems to shift normal on the road, but when in reverse and neutral it acts like it's in drive- no reverse, but it barely tries when the vehicle just comes to a stop and neutral is like drive also. I can shut engine off and put in neutral to push it.
Thank you for any advice. I was wanting to do this on my own and save money but messed up.

So you're saying you didn't check your engine oil level before going for a drive? I'm assuming you didn't set the level properly on the transmission either. There is a procedure for setting fluid level that needs to be followed to ensure the trans isn't under or over filled.

I didn't check the engine oil before driving. I did set the transmission fluid level on level ground and filled until it came out the overfill. I let it run a bit and topped it off again until it was barely coming out the overfill.
    Thank you

I'd take it to a shop. At minimum you need a drain and flush.

If it's trying to go forward in neutral and reverse most likely the forward clutch plates have welded together from fluid starvation, if thats the case unfortunately the only fix is a rebuild or replacement transmission.

So what you're saying is that you overfilled the engine with 6 qts of oil thinking you drained the engine but instead you drained the transmission? My guess is that you may not have refilled the trans correctly and it's low on fluid. Run the truck until the transmission temp is between 115 and 130deg F, cycle through the gears and pull the overflow plug on the tranny pan (allen head bolt) and see if any fluid comes out. If not then fluid is low, if fluid does come out let it drain to a trickle then close it up and you're good. Once you verify fluid level is correct but you're still having problems you're A750e/f is A750ouch.

Chances are the vehicle has been driven twice according to the OP with incorrect amounts of fluid in the transmission. It's not looking good for him.

1st post of this thread tells how to get into the proper temp check mode for checking ATF level. Did you follow that procedure?

    I agree with post 5 .
If you run the transmission in the forward range when the transmission is low on fluid , you burn the cutches in the forward clutch assembly . This results in welding the forard clutches together creating the symptoms you spesk of .
Double check the fluid and adjust yjr dhift linkage to begin

Sorry OP and to every owner that has done this but checking the oil level during fill up is basic oil change knowledge. To avoid future mishap, rattle can the oil pan a different color or do what I did, replace the oil pan bolt with a fumoto valve.

    Thanks to everyone for comments
I went back thru the transmission fluid level procedure and still the same problem. Found a place that'll replace the transmission for about $4300 with a 12000 warranty. Don't know yet if that's reasonable amount yet. It's about 35 miles from me I wonder if I can get away with driving the truck there or another shop?
