I have a 2016 Tacoma SR with 85k miles on it. I lifted the hood and noticed that my coolant reservoir tank was showing very low. This is with the engine cold and truck not started for greater then 12 hours. I see no noticeable leaks. Anyone dealing with any leaks or should I assume at this point this is just 5+ years of evaporation?

There is a coolant bypass on the rear of the engine that seems to be a possible culprit, look under near the transmission for any trace of dried coolant.

Good point, certainly would not apply then.

There is some SR V6, also a crazy rare V6 DC MT in 2016 and 2017.20220128_223847.jpg

Man, If an SR with a V6, DC and MT was available when i was shopping for my taco, that definitely would have been my choice. Pretty much same truck that I have minus the scoop and some "luxury" items.

I have only seen 2 over the years, 1 was a white that was a contractor truck and the other a red one for sale.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Or it's getting burned in the engine. Pull your spark plugs and see if any look extra clean. Like steam blasted bo carbon at all clean. You can also get a cheap boroscope to see if pistons are too clean or are wet after sitting overnight.

On a closed system, evaporation is not a thing. Hope it's not the core heater inside cabin either. That's a pain in the hass to fix.

Did it spit out from the resivour overflow? This can happen on really long drives in hot weather.

If you don't see any coolant dried up anywhere, it could be a head gasket... Do you have a Miss fire code from the obd2 ?

Could be a leak at the heater core.

What about your radiator cap? It can get worn out and spit coolant when it's not supposed to.

I would replace the cap, it's only like $17 and they don't last for ever anyway

The 2.7 has or had a similar problem with the coolant bypass.

Get OEM coolant and top off . Then keep a eye on it. Its probable that it is 5 yrs of evaporation. I believe it is not a closed system.

    Interesting, did not know that.

Why, oh why they had to use this shitty plastic for bypass…

Thermostat was also plastic on my ranger (bakelite). I had to replace it 3 times. It was on the front of the engine though. The same 4.0 on the mustang, had the metal housing.

I'm way low. Had it at the stealership in September so in theory should have been looked at and topped off then. I put very few miles on it. Takes a year to do 6K miles. Guessing that is coolant i'm seeing there. Below the low line. Almost not any in the reservoir. Topping it off now and keeping an eye on it. Nothing on the ground or anywhere else I could see in the engine compartment. Assuming that unclamped hose next to this the source? Time to part it out?

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Mine is same. I have a 2016 TRD OR, 3.5L.

Truck has 60K miles on it.

It is just above the low mark when cold.

When hot, it is about halfway between low and full.

I am not concerned. I see the plastic cap on top of the reservoir had some dried up coolant around it. Evaporation.

Truck runs like new, no leaks anywhere else. No issues with heat, A/C, driving hard up steep 5,000ft elevation climbs in summer, no issues.

I will have it serviced soon, flush and refill on the coolant. Not going to start poking around for a problem that does not exist.

Indeed. 4 cyl plastic bypass hose under the intake has a history of leaks. Dealer replaced bypass hose for me on a ranch truck. The replacement hose was stainless instead of plastic.
