What are your states lemon laws?
In Mass if it's out of commission for 15 days the manufactures has to buy it back.
    Let that clock start ticking.

That's a fair request and expectation. I do believe OP said he'd take that and move on with his life.

It's the posters here and their ridiculous demands that I am mocking.

Free parts department things, lifetime truck warranties, Diminished value compensation demands, or the holy Grail of entitlement, the "I demand a new truck, nothing less will do" is what routinely pop up on these threads.

Or the "I'd lose my shit and start yelling/screaming/tantruming" at the hapless service writer. Glad I don't have that job, I'd be fired for telling that customer to GTFO and go somewhere else with their Veruca Salt attitude.

    Just my $0.02.

Well they told the guy weeks before they could fix their truck and only with a CEL light on. I'm not a yeller, it does nothing productive but that's just poor customer relations and I wouldn't be happy about that at all as no one should. Demanding more than getting the truck fixed in a timely manner is just wrong but works for some.

You'll never get a CEL light from a bad bendix, dealer knows that and is blowing smoke up your tushie. Stuff happens, what a dealer does after that is all on them. They won't see a dime out of their pocket, they just don't want to deal with it. Use your warranty and skip the dealer if need be, get the Toyota number out of your booklet and call them direct, be polite, name the dealer, the issue, and that they are not honoring your warranty.

And if you have not filled out the dealer survey yet, do so and give them the honest poor survey they deserve, it will hurt the dealer if they get enough of them and I'd bet they will give you a call and ask you to change it. They did with me, I refused to change it because they deserved everything I said. [be honest]

In my experience working in just about every aspect of dealerships, mostly at a Dodge dealer, those "gimme gimmie" people rarely get anything. They are the original Karens.

Sounds like OP is going about this correctly. Unfortunately I do not agree with the no code, no service thing. I'd be a little tweaked over that.

I completely agree though. Have a dealer make the repair, and move on. Demanding dumb shit will get you nowhere... fast.

Yep, the starter isn't engaging the flywheel.

    Just as an update:

I took it to the other dealer. I played the video and they agreed it sounded like the starter (gold star to the Bendix guessers). Low and behold I was about to go home (part had to be ordered) and it wouldn't start and they confirmed it was that piece of the starter not engaging. The dealership where I bought it promptly called and left a meessage this morning after leaving them a 2 star review. I called them back and the guy said something like "we consider that an emergency repair and shouldn't have told you top wait 3 to 4 weeks". Apparently he reviewed my phone call with the CSR. I politely told him it all left a bad taste in our mouths and that the truck was at another dealer with the part already ordered.

Hopefully it's just a one of. The service manager said in twenty years this was the first one he saw with a faulty starter.

After my initial call I though I was kind of SOL with a bunk vehicle.

    Thanks again everyone.

Glad it all worked out. Yeh very rare these starters go bad when new. They are usually very well made.

I'm surprised the dealer didn't just grab a starter off the lot and get you on your way.

Three years ago they probably would have... but now-a-days they'd have a 50k paperweight sitting in their lot waiting on a new starter (one that is actually probably going to cost them a sale sitting there).

Hell... who am I kidding... someone probably would've offered them 49.9k without the starter

If I can get a starter overnighted to me I'm pretty sure a dealer can too, but point made.

Just grabbing a post from OP to get his attention on this.

I work in Aero manufacturing, but automotive is similar. The "Gold Standard" (which is shenanigans, it hasn't seen any benefits from companies that have bought into it) is six sigma. The point of six sigma is that 99.9996% or something like that, of products fall within the 6 standard deviations (sigma), or ±3 sigma from the nominal. This is just standard normal distribution. If you pick a random part out of a bin over and over and over, it won't be exactly 1.000inches, but it will vary a bit. That variation, falls into standard deviations from the nominal, and 99.9996% of parts are within 6 standard deviations (±3).

Point is. Your starter or whatever it is, can be that .0004%. We strive for perfection, but there is 0.0004% (or 4 defective parts per million) of parts that say "woopsies".

Six sigma is one approach. It was a buzz word, it's okay and the DMAIC principals are fine, but the unquestioning loyalty to six sigma is no bueno. I can find some news articles if you'd like, but the point is, companies that went whole hog and blind faithed it, saw no return on investment.

I do swear that some of it was to get a peek at the engineering and manufacturing principles of competitors and leaders in various industries. I believe the Toyota Lean Manufacturing / Kaizen approach did help on the operations side. Holy hell though. When applied to the engineering departments, it was a fucking mess. Similar to tool board outlines, there were 'desk maps' and other neatness principles. Kanban work flows for eng processes. It was hilarious and sooooo not value added, other than to Toyota's pockets.

Thankfully, Six Sigma didn't invade my experience, but damn. The zealots of all of these process improvement principles made some nice cash. It was bad enough for me that stuff like Ted Talks give me 'Nam flashbacks.
