My big brain gained some money (outside Roth IRA) and then proceeded to strategically burn it all and turn a 10% profit into a near 85% loss. I guess I'll report it just so they can see I'm not a threat to the market or the hedgies

I'm still trying to understand how capital loss harvesting is sound profit strategy. Intentionally selling at a loss so you don't pay taxes on your gains just reduces your gains.

10k gains + 9k losses = 1k capital gains

 

Sounds like you'd have to be confident it'd stay down long enough to avoid a wash sale and then buy back in.

I cost myself a LOT this year with something like $35k in losses disallowed due to wash sales.
