Any RX300 experts here? I picked up an 03 and it’s running rich. My initial thought is a VVT problem so I’m going to put in new VVT solenoids and do a tune-up.

The 300 has the 1MZ engine, common to many FWD Toyota products of that time. Your RX is mechanically the same as Highlander. So I would post up a question here.

Running rich? Maybe spark plugs or 02 sensors. Could also be a vacuum leak. Hard to say without a code.

Thanks. I’ll add o2 sensors to my list. I got the car for cheap and it has 260k on the odometer so I don’t mind throwing some parts at it to see what happens.

How do you know it's running rich?

Driveability issues? Codes set or pending? Guessing based on a sooty tailpipe?

Exceptionally poor mileage and that funky exhaust smell. I looked at one spark plug, barely any electrode left so I put it back in pending the new ones coming tomorrow.
