Every few times when I start my truck, the radio is on. The display is off but there is audio, even knowing that I had the radio off. Gremlins or working as intended? Would the fix be a replacement radio?

I agree with the others. Stock headunits are kinda junk. Replace with something good aftermarket. Or hire an exorcist/shaman/voodoo priestess and yeet the unholy spirits.

This is a pretty common problem on 2nd gen head units. They will freeze up and then reset on their own It will begin to happen more often. You can either buy a factory replacement on ebay, but who knows if the one you are getting does the same thing, or go aftermarket. Good thing you have a 2010 and your camera is in the rear view mirror. It makes it easier to install an aftermarket stereo because you dont have to deal with integrating the factory back up camera.

I've been looking briefly at aftermarket replacements, but it seems like a lot of them don't allow use of the steering wheel controls, which I find is super helpful

For most Toyota Audio, they perform best in the Off position.

Look up the iDatalink Maestro RR for steering controls. Some other Aliexpress headunits come with something to integrate but they usually need more work/hassle.

Crutchfield sells the gizmo that solves this. You might lose something like reset gas mileage but all the audio features work.

I never turn it on anyway because I like to listen for any odd sounds from the truck lol. So that's why I know it came on when I know I never turn it on.

Crutchfields has adapters to connect the steering wheel controls seamlessly.

My head unit develops a mind of its own in cold weather. Only IT shall select the radio stations until things warm up a bit anyway.
