I get that (used to use DPMO metric heavily where I used to work), that's why I can't get pissed for a faulty part or pissed at some person here that played zero role in its manufacture or installation.

Where I get frustrated is I am that .0004% on this and 5 other items simultanesously, in perpetuity. Literally same week as the truck: my father dies (estranged family, cremation/no cremation, estate mess; whole nine yards and still ongoing), new sheet flow action from improperly designed street/water collection by the city I am in- about 70k worth of damage, my Great Dane's perpetual paw wound (she gets blisters from doing 'zoomies' and proceeds to lick until they bleed; it goes downhill fast so she's always wearing at least one sock and sports the cone of shame when we leave-funny but a bummer) and this stuff kind of ruined my Valentine's Day with my wife (that's the worst of it). That's this week. The starter was the insignificant part of it ;)

So you're mostly right, but 6 Sigma (at least as I understand it) is actually 7 failures per million opportunities for failure, which works out to your 99.9996 rate. However, to apply that directly to the chance of getting a faulty part would be incorrect as it doesn't account for the varying number of opportunities for failure associated with a given part or process. That starter may only have 100 opportunities for a failure to creep into it's process or the components that make it up, but another part may have 10,000 such opportunities for failure. Either way the "chance" of getting a faulty part is misrepresented by using the 6 Sigma base number.

    hahaha

Yeah - we did the "office 5S" thing and it was like....really? This is where we're spending time? Taking manufacturing concepts and applying them elsewhere is....interesting.

Don't get me started on aerospaces tendency to take things way off the flightline and use them. IE: "Pre Flight Checks" .... dude we are 18 levels removed from this part even SEEING an engine, and we are in an industrial park. We are not on a flight line. If there's a flight in here, that means things have gone very, VERY wrong.

Oof - sorry man. Yeah, it happens, I get it.

Yup. I'm a senior QA Engineer with a degree in engineering and applied statistics  But I hate six sigma and really don't want to get into it to teach others the intricacies other than "there's some level of potentially bad parts making it out there, it happens, that's manufacturing".

Okay cool. The dealership called me about an hour ago and despite having to get the part from Florida, it is installed and good to go. Very cool. I will take this streak of one good thing lol.

I'll get it in the morning as rush hour is no joke around here. Hopefully the next part that breaks is because I did something (fun). Thank you again all. If you didn't nudge me I would have just assumed anywhere would have that no light no service policy. Cheers!

Most any place should take a customer complaint seriously, esp if it has the ability to strand someone.

On our Subaru, the pads rock around in the calipers loudly. A bad as that complaint sounds, the dealer checked it out for my wife and said that it was nothing to worry about.

The vehicles I work on are removed from the operators by the time I see them... any complaints are written on the pretrip cards. Every complaint I deal with, is combed over to make sure the issue needs to be repaired or is within normal compliance. Being commercial transport, if something goes wrong, my signature associated with the complaint is a legally binding contract that I did my job to insure the safe operation of that vehicle. One aspect of the job that I really enjoy, is the diagnostics. I love the challenge of figuring out the root of the problem. So that means I will test the system in all possible scenario that I can come up with to expose the issue. Sometimes to the extreme ends of normal operation. Unfortunately, at a some dealers, there doesn't seem to be that level of commitment or ethics to the customer.

Dang you guys stop it with the stats! I spent 40 years of my working career in quality assurance and I’ve been retired for just over 3 years, you guys are triggering PTSD!

Glad it is all sorted. Not all dealers are rotten, just rotten, uninformed, entitled employees on a power trip. It's like going to the DMV sometimes I swear.

As silly as this sounds, my RAM did similar, the shaft that the starter gear engages had rust built up on it. Starter would spin but the shaft never allowed the starter gear to engage flywheel.
