    HOLY CRAP!! I was gonna try pushing towards the 5160s, but i swear they went up like 30-40% in price since I bought mine three years ago! NUTS.

    I have Deaver single aal from headstrong and it was advertised 1.5-2.0"". I got 1.8" after the installation with 5100.

    Honestly, I forgot how Stock drove.
    On this setup, I can go over those wide speed bumps at 30-35 and it doesn’t bounce.

    This thread seems to have run its course, so I hope no one minds if I ask a related question rather than start yet another thread...

    Just ordered a pair of Deaver U402 Stage I springs and currently have regular Billy 5100s installed on the stock leafs. Looking at around 200 lbs typical weight in the bed.

    Should I be looking into longer travel 5100s or maybe 5160s?

    Lol @tonered I was actually going to tag you too!

    Here's what you SHOULD do... Put springs on the truck and then go out and fully compress one side up against the bumps and measure your shock length which is center of the lower eye to .5" below the lower mounting surface of the upper shock mount (the .5" is to account for the shock bushing). Take that number less another .5" or so if you are keeping the stock bumpstops since they don't flex much. If you plan on getting different bumps you'll have to rough out how they will respond. The number you come up with is your maximum compressed length. Then you take and fully relax that same side and take similar measurements to collect your ideal extended length. There is your operating range, and find a shock to fit that bill. Always remember this though... You can use shocks as limiting straps, but not as bump stops.

    All said, I completely understand the nature of the world and supply chains now so you at least want to get the ball rolling on an order should you need to place one. Since that pack lifts the truck ~2" in the 0-300lb static weight range I would say that you'll probably want a longer shock (at least slightly) if you're doing anything other than putzing around town. 5160s or 5125s are probably a good choice for you should you decide to step up and make a little more use of the additional travel provided by that leaf pack.

    Stupid Question #1: Shouldn't the compressed and relaxed distance measurements be pretty well known for a given set of springs on a given vehicle (for the bumpstops). Couldn't I just get these figures from Deaver?

    Stupid Question #2: What method does one use to compress the springs SAFELY?

    Number 1: As educated by @memario1214 , it can depend on pack thickness as the bump stop sits there and the shock mount locations don't change, relatively.


    Number 2: Lemme zoom out for some mall crawlin'. Most shocks, esp worn ones can be compressed by hand though. They don't extend forcefully.

    ...but the pack thickness is a fairly consistent property of a given leaf pack. I would have thought the spring manufacturer has this compressed/relaxed distance info for a particular, otherwise stock vehicle. But I suppose if one is replacing leafs, they can't assume you're using the stock bumpstops (or shock mounts, for that matter).

    :anonymous: I was concerned about compressing the springs, not the shocks, and that would take hundreds of pounds of force. Hadn't considered that the weight shift from one front side to the opposite rear would do it.

    SQ1 - You'd sure think so, but the issue comes down to the fact that people use vehicles differently (static loads, speeds, etc) and no one really wants to put a stamp on it and say "if you're adding this - then get this". Including me. Toss a bunch of weight in the back and you have 2 very different outcomes with the exact same components. Should I have been conglomerating all of this information over the years so I have an easily referenceable/identifiable pick sheet? Absolutely. Alas, that has not happened. :rofl: Additionally, most folks never see the limits of their suspensions so having it all PERFECT isn't a big concern for them. Most shops are just going to rough it out and most people will truly not notice the difference. Ex. Would you be perfectly happy with a 5160/5125 even if you could sneak a longer shock in there? Yes.

    SQ2 - The best way to do it is to take all of the leafs aside from 1&2 off and then you can compress the spring flat pretty easily. However, I am not recommending that you do that, or even bother. I get a little lost in the weeds sometimes and provide unnecessary detail :oops:

    There are known configurations that work with these springs (pretty much up to a +3" shock). Ex. Accutune offers a custom +1.5"-3" Fox 2.5 shock that they sell with these springs.
