Be careful if anyone other than you changes your oil

Had the Toyota dealer change my oil at 6k miles several weeks ago. Today when I went to replace my skid plate (I banged up the last one off road), I noticed that one of the bolts was only in about 2 turns, ready to fall out. The other 3 bolts were so over-torqued they felt like they would break when I tried to remove them. Luckily I got it all back together, but the moral of the story is to do your own oil changes. If they were that bad with the skid plate, God knows how they did the oil change.

 

Problem is the lower guys do the basic oil changes and they are rushed and unskilled.

You're best finding a reputable shop and sticking with them.

Home oil changes suck.

 

Please don’t tell me this was at Sarasota Toyota. Nothing but problems with these people, got my 25k mile service done. Just a tire rotation and multipoint. Every single wheel was scratched, they put my engine air filter needs attention when it was replaced on 1/17/22, and set all my tires to 39psi?! Wtf

 

Yup similar issues with my 2 free oil changes. They took off the TRD pro skid completely then it wasn’t put back on properly

when I did the next one myself, the oil drain and canister were way over torqued. I’m fairly certain the put an impact in the drain of the canister and used that to tighten it on. The canister drain plug was probably 100 ft lbs. dunno how it didn’t break

 

I had Similar issues with the Trd skid plate, drain and canister. On the second oil change, they didn't 8nstall a oring on the drain. Just hammered down.

 

Toyota tech stripped my skid plate bolts during my free 20K oil change. That was when I discovered that “Free was Not worth the price”.

 

I like them. Hanging out in the garage, tunes, and a coldie... life is good.

 

When I bought my first Truck (2000 Tundra) in college I took it somewhere to get an oil change. They couldn't get the skid plate off because one of the bolts was stripped so they just let the oil drain onto the skid plate. I stopped letting people touch my vehicles.

 

I had oil changes done to my 2001 tundra. No one ever remove or had to remove the skid plate to do an oil change. I never did either when changing the oil in that truck. The filter was close to the skid plate edge, but not the oil pan drain bolt.

 

I think it was the filter because the "leak" was coming from the front left. I thought you had to remove the skid to get to the oil filter though. My brain went to the worst-case scenario, but once I got the skid plate off everything else was fine, just oil on the skid plate. It was enough to scare me though.

 

The last time I went to the dealer for my last "free" oil change on my Camry, they gave me a list of things that need to be done. I had never walked out of the service center quicker than that day. I didn't ask for an assessment of my car. I did all that work myself anyways for under $200 and still going.

My dad had a problem with an oil change place when he took in his new 1993 Silverado 1500 with a 4.3L manual and they over filled it and didn't know how to drive a stick.

I am going to keep changing the fluids myself.

 

Get an RCI skid. It was my first mod in 2016 when I bought it, has a 'trap door' to change the filter.

 

Official dealer torque specs:

-Drain plug: 15 ugga-duggas (18 if deleting gasket).

-Filter housing drain: finger tight.

-Filter housing: 35 ugga-duggas or until you hear the plastic screaming.

-Skid plate bolts: tighten until stripped, then thread in larger bolt and apply 70 ugga-duggas.

Note: Filter is optional. Add 3 extra quarts if leaving filter housing empty or fill cap off.

 

I think if you were sloppy removing the filter you could spill oil on the skid plate, but you didn't need to remove it if you were careful handling the filter. I had an oil change done at a buddies repair shop...those jackass's left the old rubber filter gasket under the new one, and i had a slow leak. From that point on i did the job myself. I'm seriously thinking of doing my own oil changes on the tacoma now that this toyota care is finished.

I was just at Sarasota Toyota today to buy my oil, filter and differential washers. Drove around back to the parts department and after seeing what they have working there I would never have a service done there. Everyone working there looked so unprofessional and nobody had a clue.

 

Everywhere you go and everything you do these days you run into careless idiots. I make it about 6 months at a time where I just don't go to out-and-about for anything I don't really need and every time without fail even if I only pick one store to go to someone somehow does something that I just cant wrap my mind around how they are that slow, ignorant, or careless. Then it gives me a small panic attack when I start thinking how this is the life we live now where nobody gives a shit about anything and I will almost never be able to have a pleasant experience or at the minimum not get ripped off while exchanging money for services without spending an hour researching the places/peoples reputation and sifting through fake reviews. This is why Amazon is the biggest company in the world, and all these stores had to do was pay the competent employees a little more than the incompetent ones. But they never did never will and the smart people are realizing they're earning everyone else's paycheck.
