Hey folks, I have been playing with cars since 1988 when I brought a 1975 VW bug home for $100. I cut off the fenders to turn it into a Baja Bug. That was my first experience with modifications. I have seen the term 'mod' being used throughout TW, and I really think that a lot of what we do is not modding, but accessorizing. I had my GFs Range Rover tinted and PPFd, I don't consider that a mod at all. I thought about it and created a list.
MODS-as it says-these are vehicle modifications. Some are easily reversible, some are not. Generally if you need a drill bit, welder, or wire crimper I would consider it a mod.
ACCESSORIES-these are generally bolt-ons that are easily reversed. While you wouldn't remove a badge overlay, it is simple to swap back to chrome badges if you want. It could come from the port, the dealer, or aftermarket.
ENHANCEMENTS-these would be an epic fail at a Pebble Beach Concours 30 years from now, but they really are not a mod or an accessory. I'm thinking cosmoline, plasti-dip, and grille swaps.

    What do you all think???

Please don't be 'offended' if something you are proud of falls short of being a 'mod'. Being closer to factory is generally a better thing...

    MODS

    Katzkin Seat Covers

    Tunes

    Suspension lift (not TRD)

    Change in tire size

Aftermarket exhaust, exhaust re-route, generally anything other than an exhaust repair

    Bed Stiffeners

    Audio upgrades

    Sliders-weld on

    Aftermarket skids (not TRD)

    Raptor lights

    Aftermarket grilles (not pro style)

    Aftermarket bumpers

    Ditch lights

    Change in switch configuration

Molle panels (if drilled to install)

Phone and GPS mounts (if drilled to install)

    Hardwired CBs and coms

    Hardwired radar detectors

    Accessories

Removable seat covers, Clazzio, Wet Okole etc.

Factory accessories, port installed or dealer bought (bed lights, mats, tailgate lock)

    TRD accessories (including lift, exhaust)

Most Meso stuff that does not require drilling

    Vinyl inserts for glovebox, tailgate

Anything for the bed (tonneau cover, cap, bedrug, bed rack, RTT)

    Badge overlays

    Sliders-bolt on

    Enhancements (non factory correct)

    Cosmoline

    Window tint

    De-badging

    Changing color of factory wheels

    Generally plasti-dipping anything

    Removing B pillar vinyl

    PPF

    Ceramic coating

Swapping other Toyota parts (RAV 4 radio knobs, front bed rail, grille swaps, OR to pro or SR5, Lexus credit card key is a stretch Hood swaps- scoop to non scoop etc)

    Painting brake calipers

You are definitely overthinking this lol. It's not even Friday yet.

The way I see it.. classify modifications any way you want, but if what you change makes the vehicle better for you, then go for it. Toyota gave us a tremendous platform to start with, but in the enthusiast world one size does not fit all. The support for these trucks is pretty incredible. You can turn it into anything you want. Don't overcomplicate it, just enjoy it.

    Oh look, another mod....
You have put way too much thought into something that requires no thought at all.
