So I have a 2007 Tacoma 4wd with the 6 speed trans. Never had any trouble out of trans and yesterday I pulled onto the road shifted from second to third, and the shifter goes limp. Like a straw in a cup. Truck is in third gear and you can do anything you want with the shifter and nothing happens. Took out center console, removed cap off transmission and everything was fine. Plastic piece and the shifter was fine. Any ideas??

Sounds like a broken shift fork or shaft. If you can't see anything wrong with the shifter where it goes in the top you'll likely have to pull the trans and tear it down

    Sorry

Supposedly for the shift fork inside of the trans, the bolts holding it were not blue loctited from the factory and come loose over time. I imagine there's a TSB for this

Do you happen to know what model years this could occur in?

I would guess any of them or maybe earlier ones given that supposedly later years had some design improvements. But if there is a TSB I’d try to find it because it may show as applicable to VIN or may list specific years affected

a couple people have taken theirs apart to fix it which makes it look like rebuilding the trans isn’t impossibly difficult

OP, it could be something simple but my best guess is the No. 3 shift fork. Toyota cheaped-out with a cast aluminum fork and you would not be the first to have a failure.

It seems like when this happens the shift hub/balls/springs also get dislodged. This link will give you a lot of info. My take? You can get into the 6-speed for repairs but some special tools will make your life easier. Beware that parts for the inside are ghastly expensive and have been drying up. I have had to source a number of parts from Japan and the UAE.

Since you have a 2007, if you have a bunch of miles I would probably discourage you from spending much money on repairs. There were 3 versions of the transmission with the first being the worst.

Rather I would encourage a swap in another transmission from a relatively low mileage '13-'15.
