I wanted to see what options and configuration are available on the new Tundra...
All the specs looks like its really copying off of Ford F-150's homework.
    • Engine displacement
    • Twin turbo
    • 10-speed transmission
    • Hybrid drive
    • Aluminum body
    Last remaining questions:
Why doesn't Toyota let you decide the final drive ratio, if it is e-lock or open?
Why have they eliminated the 6 passenger option on the SR & SR-5 trims... :annoyed:

I thought that I would be excited about this new Tundra, but I'm just not; maybe it will grow on me and I won't need 6 seats any longer...

Same reason all the SUV/CUV start to look alike. Nobody is really thinking outside the box just going with "works."

All Tundras use Lexus LS power plants. This was planned years in advance.

It's based off the LS500 3.4 twin turbo 10 speed which is older than the F150.

    Hybrid is kinda Toyotas "thing"

The v8 was set to die and this is just long term planning.

Toyota isn't copying, they are calculated.

    Updates to come...
very much agree. What we're seeing today was planned years ago and not a "reaction" to other makers per say. Sure, they'll keep up on power games, the fablet games, etc. (which those kinds of things can be changed during the detailed engineering phase of the work).

As well - Toyota pretty much defined hybrid (and continue to defend/fight for it over EV, which IMO is good). The thing is that Toyota took it's sweet sweet time to make sure that what they put out on market still aligns with Toyota's brand.

As for the seating options - that is frustrating for those that used the 6 seaters, but they're not mainstream sales. Where Toyota is not a top 1/2 ton in the market, they have to sell to what sells (yes, Ford and Chevy still sell more 1/2 ton trucks than Yota - poor chumps :p;)).

I am glad that Yota finally understood that people DO want 6.5' beds with a CM - so at least they got that part right.

Also - keep in mind, many of the parts on these "new" '23s have been on random '20-22 models for real world testing - so any "new" model vehicle (and this is for anyone) is already 3-5 yo when it hits the road.

But yeah, I would not say Yota is copying Ford, but just took more time to make sure they have the least number of problems as possible.

p.s. keep in mind what we're seeing in the '23 tundra will be the under pinnings for the next gen Taco as they will be sharing global platforms now.

For the record I also have a F150 as well as my Tacoma. The Tacoma will be in the driveway when I die and one of the grandkids will get it. But I'm going to be shopping for a new full size in about 2 years. I'm watching how the Tundra shakes out in the meantime. One thing that I like about Toyota that I don't like about Ford is that Toyota DOES NOT offer so many options.

If I'm looking at Ford, I have 6 engines and 5 different axle ratios to choose from. If I look at used Ford going back just a few years there were 2 other engine options not available today. And with the almost unlimited options, trim levels, and cab styles you could end up with a truck that overlaps a F250's towing and hauling; or a truck that won't tow/haul as much as a Tacoma.

Properly equipped a Ford will out tow/haul any Tundra made. But those trucks are not common. All of the Tundra's are going to be really close as to capability and will beat the vast majority of F150's actually on the road. If you're buying a Tunda to actually do someBut work most any will do. If buying a Ford, you have to choose very carefully. They build an awful lot of them as grocery getters instead of real trucks.

And that isn't a knock on Ford, it's just the way it is. I happen to like the one I have just fine. But with so many options to choose from it makes it hard to find one set up the way I wanted it.

I think my main gripe with the '22s is the Hybrid. Not that there IS a hybrid (I LOVE they're *finally* putting one in a truck), but it's twofold:

    1) The fact that the MPGs don't seem to be much of an improvement over the conventional twin turbo. Seems like it's just a power adder to impress the magazine writers.

    2) Toyota's history of only offering hybrids in the higher end models. In other words, it's essentially a vanity option.

I'm betting you won't be able to get a hybrid for less than a ~$55,000 Limited or Platinum, which makes it effectively a $20,000 option if you were shopping for a base model SR. = DUMB.

Yeah, I've been trolling the toyota site all day today, lol, and I still don't see any mention of the hybrids.

I heard that Toyota will be offering a hybrid for ALL trim levels of ALL their vehicles I think by 2025, which is great, but honestly that should have been the deal from day 1. Toyota (really everyone for that matter) have definitely lost out on hybrid sales simply because they only offer them on the higher end models and that prices a lot of people out (like me). I personally don't want leather seats and all that electronic parking assist crap that come on those models, and I'm not willing to pay for that stuff just to get a few more MPGs.
