    Alright TacomaWorld
Been looking at the cel and trac off lights on the dash. Checked code. Read p2443.
Had SAIS replaced. Dash is still lit up and P2443 still present. truck is also having intermittent issues starting. Brand new optima yellow top in December. Battery, starter and alternator all read diagnostically good.
Any ideas wtf is going on?
Next exit on this rabbit hole possibly replacing the ECM?
It’s a 2014 so I’m coming up on my first required smog check this fall.
    Help!!!!

Did you clear the code after replacing the SAIS? What do you mean by starting issues? Long crank times, spark issues, etc?

Some of the Toyota techs will chime in shortly.

Code was cleared after SAIS replacement. Dash was warning light free. Over the following 2 weeks the lights were mostly back on with small blips off.
    Truck struggles to crank/start.
Plugs were just replaced in December

When you say you had the SAIS replaced what exactly did you replace?
There's multiple parts to the system, pump, valves, hoses/tubing, and wiring/fuses.
Do you hear the pump run at startup before the code sets?

Take it back to the dealer if it's not fixed when they quoted you it's fixed. They likely cheaped out on parts under warranty/recall and didn't replace everything

Started this journey with a local mechanic. Trying to avoid the dealership. Proved to be more complicated than first thought. Last ditch effort before going to dealership.
Waiting on invoice from mechanic for work done on SAIS to help figure this out.

Dealers vary with warranty work since the recall only covered up to 2012 without the purge cycle built into the SAIS. You could always delete it and just remove the software entirely but leave the hardware in place for your SMOG and visual.

EDIT: California SMOG requires all Ready codes for inspection for 2000 and newer models. You can still pass only with an EVAP in NOT READY status, all others must remain READY or COMPLETE. (SAI will never be COMPLETE or READY with your current situation) This P2443 can be a function of stuck valves and the pump was replaced. A failing pump will put you in LIMP mode utilizing on 15* of pedal travel. So a mechanic probably misdiagnosed or replaced the wrong part or with a faulty part. The valves and can be pulled and cleaned since they typically just get clogged with carbon deposits.

Air injection control valve assembly and air pump were replaced. Both factory Toyota parts.
    P2443 still thrown

What are the codes in the ECU now? Pending and Current? Which READY codes are NOT Complete or NOT Ready?

Also, with HP it could be tuned out until before his test. Then tuned back off if desired. Could the starting issue be a fuel filter

Then I would take it back to the mechanic who replaced it with OEM Toyota and get it replaced again and make a warranty claim on the part. You could pull them off yourself and look inside to see if there is carbon present. After two weeks, they wouldn't simply jam up again from carbon overload, could be jammed from something else (perhaps the load of crap he sold you that he replaced them in the first place) just sayin'.

HP cannot adjust the Federally mandated manufacturer drive cycle diagnostics. The SAI will show not ready with a P2443, therefore unable to perform SMOG. This will remain the same even with a "deleted" setup and not pass SMOG. The only NOT READY code you can have for SMOG is EVAP in 2000 and newer model gassers.

Why would the code turn off and on?
Since this past Friday. Code turned off Friday. Came back on first thing Sunday morning. Turned off first thing Tuesday. Came back on 2 hours later Tuesday morning.
Do I need a mechanic or a priest? My taco is possessed!

I understand the feeling. My speculation is the mechanic pulled the current valves and tried to clean them up. They are itermittently sticking in position causing the diagnostic failure and P2443 code. The READY code will remain NOT READY until the CEL and MIL are cleared and the vehicle passes a complete drive cycle for that system. IIRC, the SAI completes its check on a Cold Start since that is when the system injects air to assist in reducing NOs into the atmosphere while the CATS heat up. If the current mechanic is unwilling to fix/address the problem again, since it never was done properly or with parts that were bad also. Give the dealer a shot, some will handle it all under warranty work without hassle. Worse that can happen is they say, "nope." You will probably still have to pay for one hour labor for diagnostic check.

Secondary Air Injection System Bypass Kit
My understanding is that most tuners can stop the CEL from coming on by removing the code but the system won't be able to complete and show ready.
This is where our Gen2 bypass kits are a better solution. They emulate the system so the ECM thinks the system is still there and running like it is supposed to.
No messing around in the ECM and it will actually let the monitor run and show complete even if you were to take the air pumps off and toss them in the trash.
