I just spent the last few months considering the same thing..........and I went with a 2004 4X4 V6 Manual TRD with 91k miles........figured the newer the better, but if it's the right truck, any of those years could be the one...........

IMO the only advantage to the later years is that they fixed the problems with 2 sensors that were prone to failure.

I have an 02 and I love the the look of the front grill, looking at it straight on but the side view not so much, I would prefer the 2000 front end much more.

The 03s and 04s are your best bet as they were updated with a few goodies including ABS as standard.

I personally like the front ends of the 95.5 - 97 the best. Can't beat the original!

I'd buy whatever year comes with the warranty on the frame. That way, if it doesn't check out, you get either a brand new frame or an awesome check from Toyota. If they're all covered, I'd go with the '04.

I had a 2000 X-Cab, V6 manual TRD and now drive a 2001 same config. I'd rather have the 2000. I got better mileage out of the 2000 and I liked the interior better. Just my $.02.

i would vote 2004, even though i have a 2003. my only rationale is that the 2004 is a year newer than the 2003, but the lower mileage may be the kicker. I passed over a couple of 04's with mileage around the century mark, but found my 2003 w/70k on it.

95-04 are all great. some of the best memories from high school centered around my buddy's black, 96 reg cab 4WD manual V6 and certain escapades. his family owned a dairy farm, and he literally treated it like shite. never cleaned it, a couple sizeable dents, just a complete mess. as of this past november, the truck has over 230k and still going strong. he jokes that all he has ever had to replace was the timing belt, ball joints, and changing the oil every 10k miles. yes, every 10k miles...crazy~ such a great truck! (in 96 i was a sophmore in HS...damn i'm old) :(

04, mine has 162k on it and runs and drives like new, original clutch still feels fine. By 2004 they had it perfected so they re-did every thing in 05 to start over!

No TRD on the 95.5-97's. But I agree 98 was the best.............

I like the bodystyle on my 00. Going to spend alot more on an 04 than an 00, but you will also be getting a newer truck.
