Looking to see if anyone has any insight on what a good price is for the 100K Platinum extended warranty. I have my own opinions on whether or not it's worth it so we don't need to go down that road. Just curious what someone who has purchased this option has paid. I did a little research but figured I'd reach out here as well.

Backstory- buying my lease out. Trying to decide if I want to go all in on the warranty but I have a bad distrust for dealers so I double check everything I can lol.

They are telling me the warranty is 4 grand, They will sell it to me for $2600. Room to negotiate or no? If you aren't comfortable posting what you paid that's cool maybe just a yay or nay .

I understand extended warranties are a gamble. BTDT. I had one that paid off for me as well.

$0 deductible, 100k miles, transferable, can cancel at any time.

    TIA,
    Mike

    Oh look, another mod....
Do you plan on keeping your truck after 100k + miles? If so, then I wouldn't get the warranty. The majority of things that will break on your Taco will do so looooooong after a warranty expires. Put the money you plan on spending on the warranty and stick it in a savings account. Maybe add a few bucks each month. When time comes to replace something: Use that money.

Do a search on here. There is a thread about this and a dealer who sells them dirt cheap. Well cheaper than $2800. To me that price is way high.

No, fix it when it breaks. I’d rather play the lottery with the cash in my pocket and not theirs. If you don’t trust the vehicle, get the f rid of it

It’s like car insurance . It’s nice to have one when you need it . With all those timing leak cover leaks and check engine P**** codes on some mid mileage tacomas it’s definitely worth it.
    An example. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3-timing-cover-leaks-in-a-little-over-12-months.756636/

Regardless of what is said best time to negotiate on the price is when you first get the vehicle. I have the platinum with a $100 deductible when I purchased my vehicle I only paid $100 for the bumper to bumper platinum 75,000 mile warranty. This takes some serious negotiations and really need to do your research before you ever talk to the financial guys but it can be done it’s a hard pass at $2600.

Yes price is negotiable and the extended warranty can be purchased from any Toyota dealer not just the dealer you leased the vehicle from.

Also there are online websites, which like parts websites are actually dealerships operating under another name, that sell the factory extended warranty.

Thanks for the replies gents. Exactly the info I was looking for. As far as value in extended warranties for me it all depends on the cost. If it can be had for "cheap insurance" its obviously a gamble but over the 100,000 mile span to me the small cost may be justifiable. I had a 2010 F150 Platinum with 100k extended warranty. During the extended warranty period I had both electronic running board motors replaced twice ($900 each), the power rear slider (over $1000 ) and the rear limited slip differential ($800). So the one time I did it, it was worth it.

I have an Eibach protruck stage 1 in my garage I haven't decided yet if I'm going to install it, so I'm sure if I buy the warranty that's going to change the coverage rules as well.

I use my vehicles but keep them clean and nice and I'm "planning" on keeping the truck for another 10 years and giving it to my grandson when he gets his license. That plan could change at any time.

The truck is 3 years old and only has 25k on it. I wouldn't pay $2600 anyway, but if I could cut that in half or better yet under a grand I would consider it, so I will give Jennifer a call. I was more curious as to how much BS the finance guy was feeding me on the actual cost of the warranty.

Thanks again I appreciate you all chiming in!

OP, contact Jennifer Taylor @WOLVERINE Toyota. They sell these Toyota plans hugely discounted.

Of all the new vehicles I've bought, I did buy one for my 2018 4Runner. It was much less through her than what my dealer wanted. I also contacted her for my 2019 Tacoma, but didn't go through with it.

P.S. I found what she quoted me for my Tacoma at the time:
    10YR/100K B95 $ 1,360
    10YR/125K B96 $ 1,795

I got it on my Tacoma. But I plan to keep mine mostly stock. The main reason I got it is for the gasket leak that some 3rd Gens are having. It’s a major multi thousand dollar fix if it happens. It’s also nice to know that it’s just going to be regular maintenance for the next 10 years and no other expenses. If I don’t keep the truck, I can refund it, or transfer it to the next owner. Definitely get it from wolverine Toyota or get your dealer to match.

I have that Platinum care warranty towards the end of its life and recently brought my Tacoma M/T in because it’s been extremely difficult to get into 2nd gear when cold…like you need to pull HARD to get it into 2nd gear when rolling on a cold morning….Dealership refused service claiming it was normal but noted maybe that was a sign of a syncro on the way out. I guess pulling out into traffic and not being able to shift isn’t good enough. :notsure:

I’d be advised that what’s a warrantable issue is open to interpretation by the dealership despite this being an extended factory warranty.

I beleive that the dealer can get screwed on payment if they do work that is deemed unnecessary. Hopefully you have another dealer nearby for a second opinion?
If it shifts okay when once its warmed up, you should try swapping the fluid for a synthetic. Redline MT-90 or Motorcraft XT-M5-QS.

It does shift normally once warmed up. I mentioned the MT-90 to the dealership and they advised against it….I don’t want to do anything that would compromise the warranty until it’s over. It’s a bummer.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
As long as the replacement fluid fits the factory Spec requirement, you have no issues to worry about. No benefit? Put the OEM back in.

In January the dealership put in OEM synthetic…it was pricey of course and should make the transmission function properly. I’m reluctant to spend much more trouble shooting - Particularly since I’ve got this so-called Platinum warranty! It’s crazy, I’ve driven manual transmission cars all my life and never experienced anything like this. Can’t believe the dealership could claim this is normal but can’t imagine why they’d act willfully obtuse. :pout:

Maybe my only option is to try to swap out the trans fluid again.
