I’ve been driving this since 1986, 30 mpg and just amazing, I’ve hauled everything in it. Small yes but I think I can haul more in it then my 2nd gen Tacoma

Probably can, IIRC payload for the 5 lug 2WDs is around 1640 lbs…2nd Gen is 1200 something.

Breezed through the pages here a bit but I didn't see anyone mention that you either get towing OR Hybrid for the Mavrick. My lady has been eyeballing them hard to replace her Subaru impreza. She needs the extra space to tote around her gear and her pup and wants to get him out of the cab. She also wants the AWD because she lives about a mile up a private road which dirt/rutted after rains.

Last I researched you can not get the tow package or AWD with the hybrid powertrain, (probably weight distribution with battery and inability to flex). Either way, I told her the hybrid option is the only unique option the Mavrick has going for it along with the price. She originally was thinking of towing a small trailer with it but I believe it's only 1500lbs in the Hybrid which pretty much any Subie can do as well. If she opted for the Turbo 2.0 with the towing the fuel economy is not really special either.

Long story short, the hybrid fills and interesting niche (37mpg, truckish), but the non hybrid (towing and or AWD, 26 combined) seems to be short in most categories to be special, other than price.

And 100% biased, would prefer my regular cab 1999 Tacoma every day of the week in every scenario except people hauling.

Personally I’m impressed with the specs of an entry level Maverick, a 40mpg hybrid double cab truck at $21k is a pretty good deal these days. And if a hybrid isn’t your thing, I think it’s only $1500 more to jump up to the turbo 2.0, which you can do with even the base model. That’s a long ways from $27k to get in to a stripped Taco. And let’s face it, most Toyota dealers don’t even want a stripped Taco on their lot.

Now I’ll bet the pink slip to my 2015 4cyl Taco that mine’ll be on the road long after all the 2022 hybrid Mavericks have been scrapped after the batteries gave out. But that’s not a priority for everyone. I think the Maverick WILL get people who’d never consider a truck before to drive one.

Anyone remember back in the 80’s when Mitsubishi & Isuzu would run ads for either a stripped out hatchback or a stripped out truck for the same price? No air, no power anything, not even a rear bumper, but good cheap wheels that also happens to be a truck.

I saw at least three different Mavericks being used for work today.

Yes the ole cheap, import compact trucks were great. I didn't have a license when those were in production, but still great.

The batteries are not the problem. They are not as big in kilowatts as a full EV. The cost is just inflated, it will come down as the truck grows more popular, just like the Prius. Plus, if you are in the right state, you get a longer warranty on the hybrid components which includes the battery.

If the maverick last 150,000 problem free miles, then, I think most people will be happy paying $22,000 for it. The saving on gas does add up and it is priced lower than a Prius.

Hybrids, hybrid plug-ins, and full EVs are going to win. Full gas is like horse and buggy at this time. Eventually full EVs will win in the end.
