A stereo shop drilled a hole to run a rear backup camera. The hole was drilled in the driver side bottom area of cab. Gonna re-route the wires the right way through the grommet. Lucky I didn’t do any water crossing. I’m worried about water getting in there as well as rust over time. Any ideas on how to seal the hole? RTV silicone? Metal patch?

In the past I’ve split a rubber grommet, slipped it around the wire and then sealed both sides with RTV.

If it were me, I'd want to protect it from road salt and rust.
I would clean the hole, paint the raw edges, and then fill the hole with seam sealer and make sure it bonds to the metal around the hole.
Depending on how big the hole is, you might be able to just close it up with seam sealer, or you might have to shove something up in the hole as a backer. Seam sealer tends to stick to metal better than rtv, and you can also paint it when you done if you want.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Depending on the size of the hole, one of these might work:

Why the f' would they drill a hole.... there are grommets under the driver seat and the cab vents behind the rear seats. Plenty of holes to run wires without drilling new holes:annoyed::annoyed::annoyed::annoyed:

Clean prime and paint that area and rubber around the wire and plug it like the firewall.

A new stereo shop would be my first move. My second would be taking it to a bodyshop for an estimate to have that repaired correctly and then going back to the stereo shop to have them pay for the repair.

There are so many holes in vehicles to access that a quality stereo installer should know about. Drilling holes is usually only done in extreme installs, like a monster sub box filling your bed.

Edit: even you know that the wires have to be rerouted the right way... that shows how bad this installer is!

I will post it tomorrow. I planned on taking the truck back to the stereo shop that did it and pointing it out. I’m not having them work on it so I’ll ask for a refund. If not then yelp and google review forthcoming. Then I’ll see if I can take it to a shop to have it fixed. Or if it’s an easy enough fix then I’ll do it myself. I’ll use seam seal or RTV and find a grommet that fits. I’ll plug that in after cleaning out possible rust then painting it. They installed last year so who knows how much rust is in there if any. Thanks for everyone’s input.

Its good you didn’t have them work on a boat!o_O

Use a split grommet and sealer to protect the wires from chafing on the sharp hole edges.

I agree with making them pay for a body repair.

Now if I was the dumbass that punched a hole in my own truck I'd plug it with RV lap sealant (or even a dab of Bondo if it was bigger than 1/4 inch.)

But if another dumbass did that to my truck, then I'd make them pay for a welder to crawl under there and put a bead on it.

Edit: I'm mildly curious as to why you're having an aftermarket backup camera installed on an 18 Pro?

I wanted a second camera since I have an RLD canopy which completely blocks off my rear view since I carry Front runner wolfpacks on the RLD sliders. I don’t have BSM when I got my aftermarket steel bumper so it’s hard to see and go in to the next lane without cameras.

E52E8B93-8DC8-4274-B3AF-4B79EFC21401.jpg Yeah I looked closer and it’s rusted for months. You can see it on the picture. Only discovered it recently when I got new rock sliders and my installer pointed it out.

Why would they do that and not use the existing holes? Stupid shop!

Is that the ground cable for an amp?

Edit; nvm, cable for the camera.

That is a bit of a mess with the 2 extra “pilot” holes next to the main one. What’s more interesting is that white clip on the factory harness next to the zip-tie, that’s supposed to clip to something, so looks like the whole lot is a bit messed up. Personally I’d figure out where that white clip goes, use a grommet around the harness and silicone the while lot up, from both underside and topside. Wouldn’t let the shop touch it again, and you should probably check everything they did.
