If you live in CA and buy a car out of state you have to pay a "use" tax when you register it which isn't cheap, just another CA ripoff. Then there is emissions but I think all of the Tacomas have 50 state emissions

Thanking you for the heads up on the USE tax. I have never heard of that.

Replace tweeters for Subaru plug n play kickers. Also replace front and back speakers with kickers. Added a Kenwood KSC-PSW8 250W Max (150W RMS) Single 8" Under Seat Powered Subwoofer Enclosure W/Remote Control. I went with Kenwood because it’s the same as JVC but cheaper.K&N reusable filters for engine & cabin
I would go with the lower mileage. Newer vehicle and still get factory warranty on it because the older will be out of warranty. Unless you the buy extras they try to push at the dealer with that warranty.

46k for a used Tacoma is insane. Really they are both insane. But I guess I’d go with the one under 40k, assuming all else is equal (poor assumption, probably).

Truck will have to be smogged in CA upon registration.

Are all Tacomas equiped with 50 state emissions or are there 49 state trucks made?

All modern Tacomas are 50 state emissions. Most (if not all) US spec vehicles are.

But it doesn’t matter. Purchase a vehicle outside of CA, even if it’s brand new, upon registration you must provide a smog certificate.

I hope you go down fighting with a fight and haggle with them. Don’t settle for that high ticket price.

Thanks everyone. To give more context. I have been waiting to buy a truck for over a year. The pandemic kind of screwed up my plans. I am at a point that I can no longer wait. I guess which is the reason why I am almost accepting to pay more. I don't see prices dropping anytime soon.

Just curios - if I can get my hands on a 2021 trd sport with low mileage - what price should I be aiming for. Like I said, I have never owned a truck and this will be my first tacoma.

It’s time to sale your used cars now. I traded my 2019 Charger Gt with 23 thousand miles and drove it for two. I purchased the charger for 25 grand and traded in for 29grand in dealer. I had two haggle to get the extra two grand. I used that equity money on my 2021 taco. So if your trading ask for the most don’t settle for the first price they give you

Use tax will be the same … it will be “use tax” because since you already bought it, you’re not buying AGAIN it so a “sales tax” does not apply…
It is not California - all states do it similarly.

(No, in fact, there is no special California conspiracy against Tacoma buyers.)

Your out of state dealer may charge you the corresponding California tax… (most rather not deal with another state, and these days they don’t need to get the business…) in which case you are done paying your taxes.

Yes, you will have to smog… all tacos are compliant, so not an issue. California just wants to make sure you did not put in a Diesel engine in the interim…

You’ll also need to get a weight certificate at a certified scale. ($15.00)

I bought my truck at a dealer in Oregon. Paid for the truck, AND ONLY for the truck and drove off… (dealer gave me a temp OR permit so I could drive on the road) once back home in CA, I did both smog & weight cert in less than an hour. Went to dmv, paid the tax due and got my plates…

Neither... You'll regret it in the long run. You'll be throwing money away.

I guess my first question would be, how many miles do you plan on driving this truck annually?
If the number is high, I would go with the lowest price vehicle possible, since you will put tons of miles in a few years.
If the number is low and this is a long term lower mile ownership, either would work. But price difference would likely push me to lower priced vehicle. I would try to negotiate the 2021 down to a 4-5k price difference.

That’s horrible. I got my 2021 Premium Sport 4x4 for $44,660. Definitely look into traveling to find a better deal.
