So it turns out water based anti-rust paint makes for a great wood trim paint. The things you learn when you dont shop for paint at big box stores.

the link to his initial thread in a few posts down from the OP, he was suggesting that TW charge $1 for membership so that a database could be created that would keep all writeups and content accessible no matter how much time has passed. Because a lot of links to write-ups (especially ones that are several years old) take you outside of TW to dead ends or websites that are no longer active. That was part of it anyhow

the part about the FSMs wouldn't have worked because TW was forced to remove those links anyway due to piracy concerns, one of the mods mentioned that I think.

Oof. Toyotas have had some of the worst markups I've seen locally already.

it's not a bad idea in general, he's right it is frustrating especially for us 1st gens when you find a link to a write up you need and it's a dead link.

But I think TW was founded on the idea of being a free website and if you start charging, even if it's just $1....that opens up a whole can of worms with regards to how the site gets operated

I think it would be better to crowdsource the funding for a database like that, whoever donates would have free access or something like that. Maybe it could be linked to TW but it wouldn't be a part of it, I dunno.

But yeah the FSM part is tricky due to copyright and all

Pretty easy to find a FSM without TW so is it really necessary?

reminds me of a thread where someone asked a question and a reply said "here you go, next time search it only took 3 minutes to find the info".

The op replied "it took me 30 seconds to make the original post"

They'll never know the struggles of having to use an out dated Haynes manual and no internet.

the part I think would be more valuable than trying to find FSM info is not running into dead ends with user write ups. Like how a bunch of the sticky threads in the 1st Gen How To's that go outside of TW lead to broken urls

But really TW is so active and has so much info in it that's still accessible it's not really an issue, not like there's just one write up for any one thing out there. Probably the biggest hurdle is when Photobucket dropped everyone's hosting that didn't comply with their user agreement. Thousands of write ups went poof lol

They became write-ups in the realist sense.
