Have the option to get a MSI 3070ti for $850 shipped. Currently on a 1050ti, buy or keep waiting for prices to fall?

It all depends on what your goals are. a quick search looks like that price is a good one.

Are you going to water cool at all? If so, are there blocks for that card?

Does it support the games you want?

Is your monitor up to snuff?

will other components be the bottleneck?

does you're power supply support the increase in power draw?

Are you going to water cool at all? If so, are there blocks for that card? Air cooling only

Does it support the games you want? Yes

Is your monitor up to snuff? 1440 ultra wide, does not support gsync though

will other components be the bottleneck?
Currently on i7 6700k plan on CPU and motherboard upgrade next winter

does you're power supply support the increase in power draw?

Plan on upgrading to a 850w platinum as mine is now 5 years old

how much are you planning to upgrade? Are you going to go all out with everything? I like to keep my stuff as balanced as possible, with no inherent bottlenecks.

Full disclosure, I just went all out, custom water cooling, 3080 12gb, 5950x, etc, becuase I want this last round to be future proofed for a while (pending my MoBo VRM temps and power supply noisiness) as I just want to enjoy the rig

it seems like a 3070ti at $850 is a worthwhile upgrade that would work on your current system and be future proofed with other upgrades planned in the future.

As far as timing it's always tough. Will 30 series prices fall when the 40 series comes out? who knows. if crypto starts booming again they'll keep rising.

Yeah it really seems like gambling with timing haha, going into the summer when I game less I'm thinking I may just hold off until fall and upgrade everything at once. But at the same time I feel like I could get most of money back even if cards become widely available at MSRP in the coming months.

Decided to just get it, I know enough people trying to upgrade that if I change my mind I will just sell it to them at a discount.

Not much for a price drop when the 3080 ships Friday, it's going to be limited to how many are getting distributed.
If you are looking for something to hold you over until you upgrade to the monster build, good price.

Picked up a reconditioned MSI in 2017 that was used in cypto mining. $1200 off MAP, 4 months old, when there is a bust in cyrpto mining you can find them a lot cheaper 3-6 months late with full warranty.

Still debating on the MSI GS77 3040 or custom build that has the power to run it like it should. It's where MSI is falling short again. I do like the redsign on the hinges and set back of screen. Will hold up to drops np.

I returned mine and I’m ordering another.

It arrived already opened and i saw thermal paste and at least one bent pin

    FCD1ACAE-B6B8-4F68-A515-49CCDF49BB57.jpg

    Might snag a MoBo too

edit:we’ll I can’t buy it again as they limit to one per customer.

maybe it’s just not meant to be lol

Edit2: bought a 5900x, should be plenty for now. lets hope it doesn't arrive used as well.

This kind of crap totally irks me. I once ordered a pair of Magnanni shoes and got someone's old beat-up Cole Haans in the box. So obvious to catch on a return. Just lazy. Guess those people moved on to NewEgg.

Haha yeah i mean it had thermal paste ruminants on the pin side. I think I'll be happy enough with a 5900x after more research. Bonus is I'll likely use the difference to buy a super quiet 1000w or more psu. If I started hardcore rendering I'd likely swap to the 5950 or just wait for the new AMD CPUS with the LGA socket.

I wonder how much that build will cost, new AMD CPU, MOBO, DDR5 Ram, and 40 series card lol

Stopped using Newegg about 10 years ago for so many reasons including crap like opened box who knows what is in it.

Depending on the cores (threaded), case and cooling about $3700 though you may have to wait awhile on the CPU. Hit and miss as to has them and who doesn't.

    What is your OS?

yeah I'm just gonna buy a quieter PSU and be happy with the 5900x me thinks. I'm on windows 10 pro thanks to CDkeys or whatever. screw windows 11. I use ubuntu a lot for work as well, but I couldn't daily drive it at home, though I do like it a lot.

Good choice, will last a couple of years.

Win 11 will not work unless you have internet connection which is why I'm debating on the GS77 (sent MSI an email to see if I could get one with Win 10 instead, haven't heard back).
Ubuntu is easier to work with, old take off from Red Hat.
I miss the days of building your own OS and ordering a custom build from Micron.

Seriously? that OS won't work without internet?! I know you can't move your task bar and you can't drag icons around, but man I'm happy I don't have Win11

I've been running WIndows 11 for a while :anonymous:

No issues, really. I recently had a system process that appeared to be overworking itself, but it wasn't affecting performance that I could tell. I hadn't rebooted in weeks and had an update to apply, so did that and it is fine now. Didn't know it wouldn't work without an internet connection.

Speaking of internet connections, I dumped cable and switched to AT&T Fiber several weeks ago, and it's been rock solid so far. I was paying 3x as much for cable and getting 1/3 of the performance I was paying for, so I kinda feel robbed. Cable had been solid for years, but recently we've had a lot of long outages and I work from home now, so it just wasn't cutting it. I actually had a fiber cable run to the house already, I had no idea.
