Looks like it was cut off?
If that’s a “break”, it definitely broke the same on both sides?

    Are you the original owner?
Maybe someone cut it off for clearance?
Possibly for a floor mat or liner?

Part of the TSB recall with the gas pedals sticking under the floormats included "trimming" of the gas pedals. My '05 Tacoma went in for a steering rack replacement, and came out with it's gas pedal cut.

I had forgotten about that, but I was quite unhappy with the dealer doing it without my consent...

yup the previous owner clearly got the gas pedal TSB. They trim the mat and the pedal. Dumbest/most half assed fix ever. They still ask if I want them to do it on my 2010 every time I go to the dealer and I decline.

So that’s the fix from Toyota. Hack it off instead of replacing. Lol

It might seem weird for the dealer to trim a gas pedal.. but consider being in Toyota's position when a bunch of sue-happy opportunists are trying to ring your cash register. Remember that BS with the Prius gas pedals "sticking"? They did whatever they had to do to protect themselves legally and financially

That's why every toyota work-order says right at the top: "inspect installation of driver's floor mat and secure as necessary"

Same thing with every McDonalds coffee cup saying "contents may be hot" in 5 different languages

I fully acknowledge that Toyota never should have had that problem in the first place but You shouldn’t be on the road if you can’t think of shifting to neutral when your throttle sticks wide open.

I still remember how it blew my mind when they released the 911 transcripts from one of the crashes. Over a several minute phone call nobody in the car nor the 911 dispatcher thought to put it in neutral and then they eventually flew off the road.

You're missing the point though. That driver knew exactly what he was doing, he was trying to get paid.

When the dealer offers to trim the pedal in your truck, it's not about safety or offering a "fix" for the gas pedal issue. What they're doing is checking a box that says "customer DECLINED gas pedal trimming when it was offered". That way if anything happens and toyota corporate gets dragged into court, they can say "well your honor, we offered to trim his gas pedal and he declined so we're clearly not at fault here". All they have to do is show that they "made an effort " to protect your safety.. even when it's something pointless and silly like trimming a plastic pedal

These types of decisions are not made by engineers, they're made by lawyers and bean counters

The dealer did this to my 04 4Runner years ago during a normal service after Toyota was sued for a pedal that got stuck under a floormat. I was so pissed.

I totally understand. I get checking the liability box from Toyotas perspective. The instance I’m talking about was one of the fatal crashes. I don’t think they were trying to get a payout…

My pedal is still fully intact.
I’ve never been asked or told I need to have it “fixed”.

Mine either doesn’t fall into the recall range, or my dealer doesn’t want to ask me.
My patience might have be tested in the service center once.
But that’s all in the past, we’re on “better terms now”
